Govt. Looking At Shifting Scholarship Exam To Grade 7

The government is considering the option of shifting the Grade 5 scholarship examination to Grade 7 to reduce undue pressure on students.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena has said that medical experts who have attended the parliamentary consultative committee meeting of the Education Ministry have said that the Grade 5 scholarship examination placed an undue burden on children at a tender age.

The Minister has told the media that the medical experts have proposed that if the government wished to continue with the Grade 5 scholarship examination, they could shift it to Grade 7.

According to Gunawardena, although Sri Lankan children were intelligent to face the challenge of a competitive exam in Grade 5, it was an undue pressure on them.

It is true not this examination give undue pressure for children: Moreover, this examination should be similar to Grammar School Examinations in the UK. All examinations are outdated Examination systems: Children memorised in most of the subjects except in Maths and Science: Our educationalists should reconsider this examining systems soon: Course work, Academic referencing, vocational training, practical assessments and more new methods of evaluation should be incorporated in to examination systems: it is not fair to evaluate students life skills just through hours written works only: Srilankan Examination Board still live in olden age: it is at least 50 years behind in its examination and evaluation methods:

Earlier also I mentioned this examination as a Criminal case. Lankan you are very correct. The SriLanka Education System is producing now cranky fellows. The children should be allowed to participate in Pansal,Daham pasal, Churches and Kovils to clen their minds instead of putting pressre above their heads.

There is alarming rise in the prevalence of childhood Diabetes.

do we even need scholarship? first of all, i can remember how i suffered in scholarship. its a business for teachers who call them scholarship specialists.
i still remember being stuffed in a garage(which the teacher modified to a class room by putting tables n chairs with 100 other kids in a place with no ventilation.
this is really annoying…..we have to change this
    abolish scholarship.
we have O/L and A/L. thats good enough.

Kugan,my personal view is we need not this scholaship examination. In BRITISH COLUMBIA,CANADA the Education Level in all the schools are the same. How many types of schools in SriLanka? Jathika pasal, madya Maha vidyala, Maha Vidyala, kanishta Vidyala ete..ete..I think we have a useless Education System.

During my schooling, the scholarship examination was in grade 7. Only two batches followed that syllabus and sat the NCGE examination in grade 9 which was parallel to GCE O/L. The system was quickly changed by a new administration after 1977 general election. Politicians always used our education ministry to try their ideas without any vision or global competitiveness.

I think Sri Lanka should move towards harmonizing syllabus with IB or IGCSE which would give them international competitiveness. And I am confident that our village folks would do better than the so called elites of international schools and qualify for foreign university scholarships.
