Journalist Threatened

A journalist attached to the Rathu Lanka newspaper has been threatened today (26) by a group of persons identifying themselves as members from the defence establishment.

The group had after introducing themselves security personnel, had requested for Rathu Lanka journalist Sanjeewa Padmasri’s identification papers. The threats have allegedly been leveled against Padmasiri after he had shown his media accreditation card issued by the Government Information Department.

The Rathu Lanka newspaper is published by the JVP affiliated Socialist Workers’ Union.

Padmasiri told The Sunday Leader that the group of persons had approached him in a black jeep bearing number 32 – 8833 near the Borella Kanatte when he was on his way to his office in Narahenpita on his motorbike.

Padmasiri had been threatened and asked to watch his step or face serious consequences in future.

Following the incident, Padmasiri has lodged a complaint at the Borella Police under the number 62/309/CIB(1).

Meanwhile, Editor of the Rathu Lanka newspaper and former JVP MP K.D. Lalkantha condemned the threat on his journalist and said the members of his staff would not bow down to such cowardly acts.

He said the newspaper would continue to be the voice for the working masses and fight to win their demands.

    Lanka journalists must be ethical and honest. Unfortunately, all journalists are divided according to the politics in the country. That is the primary reason for these threatening and mistreatments. Journalists must be independent from any political party and they must publish real situation. Journalists must not fabricate stories. That is a violation of ethical code in that professionalism. They have enough lessons in the past. In fact, we are reading the materials relevant to reporting without boarders ( Its primary focus is to provide information to the public without fabrication and bias.
