NTUC Campaigns For Support At District Level

The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) together with the Joint Trade Union Forum is currently appointing district committees to garner the support of the working masses to win their demands.

NTUC Head and JVP politburo member K.D. Lalkantha said that a committee comprising 17 trade union representatives would be appointed in each district to create awareness of the three demands agreed upon by the Joint Trade Union Forum and to muster the support of the working masses in each district.

The three demands are to call on the government to grant a Rs. 8,000 salary increase to the workers, to rectify all existing salary anomalies and to stop suppressing workers and students who stand for their rights.

A district convention headed by the NTUC was held in Kurunegala yesterday (26) and will be held in Gampaha today (27).

Lalkantha said the trade unions would fight to win the demands of the working masses regardless of the obstacles they would have to face.

“Like the students movement, the trade unions would also be accused of being disruptive by the government when we fight for our demands, but we will not be deterred by it,” he said.
