NTUC Threatens To Join Student Protests

The National Trade Union Centre (NTUC) while condemning the arrest of Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Convener, Udul Premaratne warned that the trade unions would join the students in their campaign.

NTUC President and JVP politburo member, K.D. Lalkantha said that if the government continued in its suppressive actions against the university students, the working masses would be compelled to join with the university students to help win their demands.

He called on the governmentt to release Premaratne and the other university students and said Premaratne was being arrested on trumped up charges.

“Our universities are in a mess and the government just wants to pass the buck to someone else,” Lalkantha said.

According to him, the government did not care about the university students and had resorted to thuggery.

Lalkantha charged that not only was the government trying to curtail free education but was also attempting to suppress students who participated in protests against them.
