Prisoners Clash With Policemen (Photos)

A clash between prisoners and policemen has resulted in at least 50 policemen being hospitalized.

The policemen were attacked by prisoners during a search operation this morning.

About 4,000 prisoners had been asked to move out of their cells for a surprise drug raid.

The raid was carried out by 500 police and prison officers who were later attacked by the prisoners. Following the attack, 46 police officers and two prison officers have been admitted to the National Hospital for treatment for various injuries.

Photos show the scene outside Welikada prison shortly after the attack.

There is no mention of the prisoners. How many prisoners were wounded too? What provoked the attack? Prison overcrowding is a real problem in Sri Lankan prisons.
