Recognising Team Members At MLH This Christmas Season

The Mount Lavinia Hotel believes in team recognition and on December 5, the management hosted 800 employees and their families to a grant event.

General Manager, MLH, Anura Dewapura has contributed greatly to enhancing the image of the hotel and improving the quality of service and innovativeness in dining, events and products. This has certainly made MLH the most talked about hotel in town.

Speaking at the event, Dewapura observed that the key to the success of the hotel is its staff. Financial rewards, the company’s ‘brand’ or the quality of its executive team will not, by itself make the MLH successful. This success is dependent on the efforts of each and everyone on the team, he noted.

He elaborated further, saying that recognition is key to strengthening team member relationships.  During these tight economic times, the staff were called upon to do more with less resources.  Keeping and motivating high-performance employees becomes even more critical during these times.  “As a leader, it is your job to recognise and bind your most valued people to your team and your company. And no doubt my engineering team did wonders by saving millions for the company,” he said.

“We do not wait until we offer a raise to recognise great performance; a heart-felt and sincerely delivered ‘thank you’ is its own reward.  When team members feel recognised and involved, they are much less likely to keep asking about money.  Examples of things we include in this process are (a) Remembering our team members’ birthdays, (b) Lavinia Star – recognising efforts that made an impact on quality of service and product, (c) Recognising the team member of the month, (d)  Walking around the departments on a daily basis and identifying opportunities to say thank you and giving verbal recognition of effort,” the General Manager said.

Dewapura speaking further said that it’s all in the presentation.  Praise and recognition must be specific to have an impact.  Focus on the harvest and identify behaviour that contributes towards improving the team as well as the company. With this type of focus, the team will understand that recognition is not a popularity contest but an important tool to motivate people toward specific goals, making team members more efficient and work groups more productive.

Finally, make formal milestones worth remembering. “Presenting a formal award doesn’t have to be a burden, it can be an opportunity to bond a team member to you and your team and to reinforce common goals and vision.  Keep on growing!  Recognition means most to a team member when it’s sincere and spontaneous.  Lavinia Star is a mechanism that brings out the best through recognition,” he said.
