Sajith Throws Down The Gauntlet

By Nirmala Kannangara

Sajith Premadasa

Hambantota District UNP MP Sajith Premadasa is to meet Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe this week to declare his intention to run for the party leadership, it is learned.
Secretary of the UNP Management Committee, Bodhi Ranasinghe confirmed this to The Sunday Leader and added that Wickremesinghe would be given the senior leader’s post if he was willing to accept it.
“Premadasa summoned 20 party professionals, Provincial Council and Pradeshiya Sabha members last week to hear their ideas. More than 95% wanted him (Premadasa) to take up the leadership before the next local government election, while the rest wanted him to be the party deputy leader until end 2011. So Premadasa decided to declare his intention to run for the party leadership at the earliest,” Ranasinghe added.
According to Ranasinghe, three senior party members, one of whom includes Ranjith Madduma Bandara, will accompany Premadasa to meet the party leader.
After the meeting, the Working Committee will meet at the end of January or early February to decide on future plans. Nominations for the five senior posts would then be put forward, and a secret ballot would be held from the Parliamentary and Working Committee groups to select the candidates in the event of a contest.
“Once these appointments are made we would hold yet another convention in March to get these decisions ratified,” claimed Ranasinghe.
When asked whether Wickremesinghe would accept the senior leader’s position, Ranasinghe said that they were expecting Wickremesinghe to accept the post without creating division within the party.
“We have already made the proposal to Wickremesinghe through Mallik Samarawickrema, but we are yet to hear from him,” added Ranasinghe.

Sajith. This is your chance to weed out those traitors to the nation within your party and kick them out once and for all. Those who insulted our gallant military, those who have been towing the line with the terrorists and those who have been bowing to the West at the expense of our country need to be completely eliminated from the party and from the political forum in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s majority’s aspirations must be first taken care of while bridging any gaps with the minorities. If you are elected leader of the UNP and you DO kick out these unreliable and treacherous members from the party, the majority will certainly elect you to lead the nation and continue the progress that the current government has already embarked upon.

    • Nalith

How can he lead a country. He went to Hambantota for treasure digging. His brother in law sold valuable painting of Mulkigirigala temple. In addition to that valuable furniture at Presidents house were missing when they left after President Premadasa’s demise.

      • NeutralTamil

any one who talks against the government is a traitor in this country, no freedom of speech. anyway, as far as i’m concerned, i’d prefer MR and namal to sajith.
i think sajith is a real snake….will be really dangerous if he comes to power.
i have been a hardcore UNPer forever when ranil was the leader but anytime i’d prefer MR over sajith. hope many UNP supports feel like me.

    • wicky

You are an MR sucker. Do not put your figer in to UNP affairs. Mind your own party

  2. Psycho

Save my country my lord! This Sajith to rule my motherland, No! No! No!. Credentials? being the son of a nut and a crook.

    • ANIL

THE NAME YOU SELECTED TO POST COMMENTS REALLY SUITS YOU. YOU DONT HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR YOURSELF. YOU LICK SUNAMI RAJAPAKSE FOR SMALL MONEY.

    • Jehan Usman

      Psycho is back.
Its inevitable that Sajith is going to lead the grand old party. So no use all these hue and cry psycho. Sajith will have enormous support and things might change in a great pace.
If Sajith could shine at Hambantota he can shine anywhere in Srilanka.

By the way we can sence that the government is disturbed these days.

    • W. Malaviarachchi

Sajit Premadasa is too young to lead the Grand Old Party. He can be a National Organiser for the present. Sri Lankan polity needs a mature politician to lead the country who can command the respect of all communities. The goal is not to beat President Rajapaksa but to bring peace, harmony and economic stability to the country. Young Premadasa’s father had many poverty alleviation programs which were very successful. However, he was not acceptable by his own party stalwarts besides the SLFP lead by Mrs. Bandaranaike. Although, young Premadasa will not be acceptable by the general public of Sri Lanka as the Chief Executive he can still serve the country in a leading support role in the future making a good contribution for development of the country. Young Premadasa must realize his limitations. This is my candid opinion.

      • I Hussein

Your opinian is fine Mr Malaviarachchi. But your point is not clear. If young Premadasa is not suitable yet to lead the Grand Old Party, who do you suggest? Or are you in other words saying RW should remain as chief.
Majority of the UNPers dont like RW as their leader any more. RW maybe educated, experienced, gentle and a man with a vision and has diplomacy but thats not what the avarage SL want. What they want is a leader who dressed in sarong, speak sinhala, deliver patriotic jargons, Speak outdated statements against western world, Entertain them with talk against bread and dough nut etc. Sajith P can do this superbly though he is young. Sajith is a western educated guy with a good political backgroud and support around him who can deliver good speaches in both Sinhala and in English.
Sajith with Dayasiri, Gayantha, Buddhika, Talata and ofcourse with senior leaders could form a formidable force. This is ideal time for the Grand Old UNP to bounce back with a new vision like his late father did.
Having said that I still believe that Ranil will be good to lead the country but people think otherwise.

AFTER RANIL A TREASURE HUNTER AS THE LEADER OF UNP !!!!.

By the way Is Srilanka belongs to banda or rajapkse family? are you talking from your mouth or somewhere else?

  4. Bandaraa

Sajith ,How can you come out clean to follow your fathers divide and rule polices , giving arms to L.T.T.E to destroy his political critics & opponents, Humiliating the professionals and forcing them to leaving the country, allowing friends to carry out treasure hunting in archeological sites , murdering security personnel in connivance with the L.T.T.E. and many more.. Ranil will be compelled to expose these crimes if you try to oust him from the leadership.!!!!!!!

    • Afzal - Colombo

It is necessary to have the father’s genes but it is not necessary that the principles should be the same in his political career. I am sure that Premadasa Jr. would have learnt many lessons from his father’s good and bad decisions and I am also sure that it will be different from the present family type.

    • ANIL

YOU ARE DREAMING. DONT THINK RANIL IS LIKE SUNAMI RAJAPAKSE. MAHINDA EXPOSE THESE CRIMES IF YOU TRY TO GO AGAINST HIM. RANIL IS A GENTLEMAN AND THERE IS NOTHING TO EXPOSE OF SAJIT. HE IS EDUCATED ,EXPERIENCED AND INTELLIGENT. HE IS THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED INTELLIGENT AND UNEDUCATED INTELLIGENT PEOPLE. THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT SUNAMI RAJAPAKSE ARE CROOKS,EDUCATED BUT NOT INTELLIGENT PEOPLE.

      • Click Lanka

        Anil
WE CAN SEE YOU ARE IN LOVE WITH Ranil .

        • go click lanka
          lick RAJAPAKSES

        • ANIL

Click Lanka I said he is a gentleman. In you comment you said ” WE CAN SEE YOU ARE IN LOVE WITH Ranil” When you said WE I SUPPOSE YOU ARE COMMENTING FOR SOMEBODY ELSE. COME ON MATE BE DECENT WHEN YOU COMMENT AND ITS NOT DEFFICULT TO BE DECENT EVEN FOR A FOOLISH PAERSON.

  5. Party leadership is too early for you. Give Karu to some time. It will lead to one party.

  6. Somapala

Sajith has exibited to be a whimp. There had been lot of talk. The so called new constitution has made no change in the administration of UNP. Sajith who roared that democracy in the party will be established wheat has he done. He is dud and a half.

  7. Ravi C Sam

Sajith Premadasa 2011 seems to be a year of success for your political moves. The present Leader of the UNP a well matured politician who could be a good advisor to you international affairs.

You Late President Premadas’ development program which was put aside after his death should be revived again. It will help our motherland to prosper. The village income should grow… “Gammi Arthikaya” grows the country too will prosper.

Work within the democratic process…… Peace and prosperity to our nation.

  8. raymond

It appears end of the Rajapaksa Dynasty is not too far !!!!

    • Khan

Sajith posses all the qualities to be the top leader of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka will definitely benefit from him. He is good dynamic and capable. Please sajith go ahead and take over the leadership of a party and prepare yourself for next big election.

      • Rabok

Hi Khan -Sajith is too young to lead this country – Opposition need a leader who is accepetd in the international arena – but not a pet dog of western powers – Ranil is a crafty political manpulator – but a pet dog of west – however how much he tried he cannot get rid of his western mind set – and he will remain alein in the eyes of rural population in the country – Sajith can be good national organizer – beyond that he is useless – big mouth — Karu on these counts is a good option – with more exposure in the international arena he will become a good leader who could balance his legs between national and international arenas –

    • millanova

      @raymond
I think you are right. And what do we now face ? Another marauder. The son of a megalomaniac whose only credentials are being the son of a megalomaniac. Long live Sri Lanka.

    • Nalith

Are you dreaming. Treasure hunters has no place in Sri Lanka.

    • I Hussein

I agree with Anil and Raymond.
If Sajith choose intelligent bunch of advisors and commited loyal people around him count down will start. Sajith is also intelligent like RW and not a rogue. Both are good leaders but Sajith is highly popular among common people than RW and accepted by many.
He would certainly take SL to a new direction. The best thing about Sajith is that he never criticise MR for the good things he did. Hence even the opposition seem to like him. Being R Premadasa’s son is actually an advantage for him though some trying to highlight it as a negative point.

  9. Appuhamy

As long as the disputes within the members of the UNP continues – which will continue until all the present senior leaders are alive – President Rajapakse and his party will continue to lead the nation. As long as the UNP does not offer a sincere alternative to the current government, President Rajapakse and his party will continue to rule the country. As long as traitors like RW, RK, JJ, KJ, Mangala, Rosy, etc continue to remain in the party, President Rajapakse and his party will continue to govern.

  10. A. Waragoda

Sajith, I feel very for U,
U are already being pushed to political dustbin by some invisible movements. Anyway thanks to Killer M. Rajah U’r deterioration is getting expedited.

Sajith, why not U ask for Pradhesheeya Sabha and get a training.
In any case I want to see U stay in politics.
So that hurry up go to the leader and get Colombo Central.

    D’nt be a fool.
    Wara.

  11. A. Waragoda

Sajith, I feel very for U,

    Wara.

  13. Anu K

Sajith is slowly getting all what his father had. Buddhika Pathirana will be A.J Ranasingha. Ranil and Ravi will be Lalith and Gamini. Rosi to run all the brothal houses. Sri Lankans will have a worse ruling next to MR. God bless UNP and SRi Lanka.

  14. Lakshman Gunawardena

Your confidence and foresight will lead the UNP firstly to be united and then towards gaining power of the country. Wish you all success

    LG

  15. priya

Sajith I salute you asyou have stood by our gallant army never towed the line with terrorists for personal gains MOTHER LANKA needs leaders like you theathend Mahinda who understands the aspirations of the common man to lead thecountry forwards

  16. Genaraala

Irrespective what they say about Premadasa and his style of management, he was the most effective president which helped the masses. Premadasa was no exeption, every politician made money and practised nepotism to its highest limit but Premadasa’s project still remain un parallelled. The only problem he faced was, he was rejected by so called high cast and the Colombo elite.

Sajith has already proved himself by contesting in Hambantota. If wanted he would have contested the very safe seat in Colombo central and won without even canvessing. So give the man the chance, So far we have not heared of any misbehaving, even during his youthfull years when his father was the president, unlike some other political brats. he is the only politician who could stand up to Rajapaksas. So give the man a chance. If somebody has any concrete evidence of his misdemeanors , please let all of know!!!!

  17. Monkey Boon

Self evaluation would be the success of anyone. Think of it before trying the presidency.

  18. priyani

The only person who could fight the Rajapakse regime is Sajith as Ranil do not have the courage to do it– the only intention he has is to be the leader off the party and enjoy perks off being the leader of opposition. He is responsible for Rajapaske’s dangerous 18th amendment and crossing over of 64 UNP mps too. All patriotic Sri Lankans should rally Behind Sajith even though his father made unpardonable blunders, we must never forget that Sajith is a well educated leader who goes out of the way to help poor community.Bravo Sajith we are with you go ahead…

  19. P.L.J.B.Palipana

The general public will choose MR as their President once again. There is minimum 12 years ahead for Sajith to reform. Who is this in-matured man to challenge MR.

    • ANIL

Palipana People are not fools, MR IS MATURED ENOUGH TO STEAL SUNAMI DONATIONS. IMMATURE HONEST PERSON IS 1000000 TIMES BETTER THAN MATURED OLD CROOK.

  20. Lanky

    nobody is forever…

  21. SAJITH DONT BE HURRY, NOW SOMEONE IS MISLEADING TO FIGHT FOR THE LEADERSHIP, BUT YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCES LIKE RANIL, SO BE
QUITE TILL PEOPLE OF SRILANKA TO FORGET WHAT YOUR FATHER DID,
ARMING LTTE, SUPPLYING CEMENT TO BUILD BUNKERS, UNARMING OUR
600 POLICE PERSONNELS IN EAST AND GOT KILLED….MORE THAN ANY
THE BHISHANAYA TIME KILLING OF PREMAKEERTHI,RICHARD DE SOYSA,
LIKE SO MANY EDUCATEDS WERE KILLED….NOW JAYALTH IS USING FOR
    BAD…DONT BELEIVE THAT TRAITOR…..

  22. athula

There is a BIG difference between “Safe driving” & “Fast driving”. You are a Fast driver. Don’t Jump the Gun. If you are qualified, suitable & entitled to get the leadership; you will get it. But the way you approaching to that is not accepted at any cost.

How Dutugemunu became the King? How Mahinada Rajapaksa got the leadership of SLFP? I realy feel you are NOT MATURED ENOUGH to rule our country. You have to go long… long… way.

Still we remember ‘Killers’ of Elephents in Yala sanctuary for Tusks .

  23. Kavan Ratnayaka

Ranil is the biggest enemy of Sri Lankan people at the moment. The reason why I say that is because Rajapaksha govt. is allowed to loot from poor people through massive corruption , Oppress Tamils and corrupt the justice system because of the weak opposition. So the govt. wants Ranil to be a ‘pupput ‘ opposition leader so that they can continue easily. They know that Sri Lankans will never ever elect Ranil as the president. Everything he touched starting from his early education ministerial portfolio was a disaster. So who would elect him as a president.
So by not allowing Sajith to be the leader of UNP he has blocked the way for an alternate leader. If Sajith becomes the UNP leader he can induce new direction to the UNP that is acceptable to people of Sri Lanka.

Dictatorship regime with weak opposition is a recipe for disaster .

  24. Jehan Usman

WOW – Already the hoodwinked govt supported shedding croc. tears for Sajith. Advising him this isnt the right time or he isnt the right man. Sajith is 100 times better than the current regime who got political knowledge, western education, love for the poor and rural people & he talks sence.

Stop barking guys, its on now and Sajith is gonna go ahead.
He will be an ideal leader for SL.

  25. Gemini

It is the end of the UNP.It is time for SF.

  26. Rohan

Every thing is me, me,me Only I can solve any thing… Once I get the power rest is history. My father did the same….

  27. bampi akka

Another Premadasa? Aney, please dont give us any more. One is more than enough in our lifetime.

  28. Palitha. Ranatunge

Once it was Karu, now Sajith, next it will be Rosy. What a politically bankrupt party with m….. at the helm.

  29. Palitha. Ranatunge

Sajith is a son of a traitor. If he becomes the leader of UNP it would be blessings in disguise for people of Jayalath Jayawardena’s calibre.

  30. Palitha. Ranatunge

Who is this Sajith? What are the attributions he has to lead an established political party in the country?.These are the matters that UNPeers should take into consideration before ousting Ranil from the leadership.UNPs’ so called executive Commitee doesn’t represent the sentiments of the mass members or the hardcore UNP supporters.Ranil’s credibility, nor his past is a thing that people are much aware of.Considerig party’s reforms and focussing of her future, with a view to make a greater impact on future elections has indeed play a vital part in selecting a leader, who is capable of posing a threat to Mahinda Rajapakse regime.
Mahinda.R$ajapakse by no mean is a true leader who has won the hearts of Sri Lankans especially the rural masses. There isn’t a single member in the current UNP, who could come closer to Mahinda even.My earnest feeling is that UNP too should join the government, than waisting time in looking for a leader to run the politically bankrupt party.Bringing Sajith Premadsa as the leader will never attract the rural masses. If UNP think Sajith is the only answer to this crisis then they are only digging ther own grave.

    • ANIL

Thetr is no one in UNP even to come close to Mahinda & family when it comes to misappropiation of our country’s money.

  31. save our country from rajapaksas
    SAJITH YOU CAN DO IT

  32. bampi akka

Save our country from another Premadasa.

  33. san

He will be a brutel leader if elected, Son is alike the father

  34. san

During JRs time his father was sick of power hungry. Therefore he created a situation where JR could not rule the country and had only option to give to Premadasa. This young premadasa also following the same root of his father. He is also a sick of power hungry like his daddy. He is creating a situation in UNP where Ranil can not stand alone. If he is elected as a PResident he will be worst than his Dad for sure.

  35. A. Waragoda

Sajith, d’nt be foolish, Start distributing sawing machines across the country.
    Wara.
