“Sri Lanka” To Replace “Ceylon”

The Government Information Department has said the government has decided to change the names of all public enterprises that begin as Ceylon with the word Sri Lanka.

  1. Ian D.S

Another worthless exercise by a bankrupt government done due to the sheer lack of imagination and more important things to do. How about changing the name of this country also to Sri Somalia as that is where we are heading.

  2. rocket

Rather than step by step change , they can straight away change to “Rajapaksthan, which serve the time, cost and importantly feed happiness to MR & co ego’s.

    • Gamunu Wijesinghe

You are a deluded man rocket. It is clear that some people like you still consider colonialism as acceptable. Have you no pride in being a SriLankan? May be you still want to be a CEYLONESE!!.

      • Jo

Why not? At least I will be Ceylonese first, before being Sinhalese Tamil or burger or muslim

        • gamunu

Jo, Talk sense here. I wasn’t refering to the race. it my national identity I was referring to. Awith a name like yours I won’t be surprised of your inferiority complex. Obviously some hair brained people like you want to be identified as Ceylonese. That speaks volumes of your ego. So just keep it to your self.
Ii is your prerogative and your problem to call yourself what you like but there is world of differnece in being a colonia sucker and a true patriot.

  3. Pon

The name CEYLON in the history cannot be changed. There are many books with name CEYLON.

    • Gamunu Wijesinghe

Pon, So what?. Look at countries such as Iran, Myanmar, and Zimbabwe? Also cities in India. What effects are there on these changes? Be proud to be a SriLankan and support this change. It does not mean everything a white man does is correct. People like you will always be slaves to them. That is your problem. For people like you anything from the west will smell of roses. Do you want all SriLankans to wear trousers too?
If this is due to your hatred towards Rajapaksa regime that is different and I can understand your frustration.

  4. Better name every thing as “Foolish Lanka”

  5. raj

may country should be renamed with MRGB-Karuna-Douglas-Mervin Lanka

  6. Gamunu Wijesinghe

Ian.D.S. go to hell. some of us still value our heritage. British invaders did not consult the nation before changing the name Lanka to Ceylon? They did so to prove their superiority as with other countries like Rhodesia, Persia etc..
It is time we show our pride and make amends even at this stage.

Even in India the names such as Bombay, Culcutta, Madras have changed. that is national pride. Have you anything to say about those cahnges? Why bother then? If you cannot stomach these issues that is your problem. Gone are the days when the Colonialism reigned. So learn to live with modern trends and accept that the changes are inevitable..

  7. raj

until Sri Lankans are reeducated with different philosophy, country will have ethnic problem. Ethnic problem is an mental illness that can be cured by psychologist.

    • Gamunu Wijesinghe

Same goes to people like you too!. I suggest you too get re-educated in how to live along side the other communities in SriLanka. It is a country for all. There is nothing wrong with the sinhalese people. It is the Tamils who find it hard to blend in with the rest. You have a ego problem. Always plays the victim when in fact the opposite is the truth.
Go and seek medical help ‘cos you are a nut case.

    • peter casie chetty

Only the Tamils have an ethnic problem because their only chance of getting the dole anywhare is to claim that there is an ethnic problem. Some Burghers will support your lies.

  8. Bulto

Big companies and even smart countries spend millions and even billions to build BRAND names and IMAGE building using very expensive advertisers and PR companies.

The brand name of CEYLON is some thing that exudes a country that is rich and civilized and the people are advanced, a land that is exotic and full adventure which tourist will love.

What does the name SRI LANKA tells you. A poor country run by full of country bumpkins ravaged with war and exporting womens as slave to rest of the world.

the SINGAPORE is a brand name built by the British, that smart country used that name pretty good , but we also got a brand name CEYLON which is equally well reputed, See how we squander away and scummed to cheap politics the third world style.

Some ot the most successful and prosperous islands brand name in Asia

    HONG KONG
    MACAU
    SINGAPORE
by God it could have been CEYLON as well

    • Gamunu Wijesinghe

Bulto, Everyone knows SriLanka now. Especially after defeating the worlds’ most vicious terrorist organisation. It is time you adjust to changes. It looks like people with an attitude cannot call themselves SriLankan.

    • Tony Candappa

Mate whoever you are thanks for the comment. The name Sri Lanka has such a stench to it. Ceylon was such a nice country. Yes you are correct when you say Singapore has benefitted from both worlds. To the Singaporean their “colonial” past is a source of sterngth.
Remember people of my once homeland; without Britain we would not have any of the tea Plantations or an English language based education.
      Thanks.

      • gamunu

Hello candappa, does it hurt you to see Ceylon changed to Srilanka? Do you call the Tea plantation to be beneficial of us any more? You are either in denial or ignorant. British converted our paddy fields to tea plantations because they wanted a cash crop to satify the colonial consumption. They did so by discouraging local growth. To feed the nation they imported rice from other countries neighbouring countires. That is part of the truth. They wanted a place with an ideal climate to grow Tea to satisfy their needs. So that is how we were lumbered with Tea exports and several millions of Tamils of Indian origin. One more thing. Who controls the prices for commodities such as tea and rubber? Just be sensible. That is my advice to a deluded individual like you. No need to thank me.

We cannot consume all the tea we grow and rely heavily on developed countries for instiable appetite for tea. They control the price for which every Srilankan is suffereing.

Regarding your comment on English, there are many countries in the world with education not based on so called English. France who are next door have their own system.

Finally, Britain got mre in retuen from ruling Ceylon than we ever got from them. So if you still want to be a colonial sucker be so and good luck. I am proud to have a SriLankan name. Not a name like Tony!!!!!

    • Jo

I really like what you’ve said Bulto… so very true

  9. garawi

Wosrt hit will be the good old “Ceylon Tea” !

    • gamunu

Jo, I am not surprised with your view.

    • gamunu

Can you buy a box of Ceylon Tea from a Supermarket in Europe? If so talk. Even in shops owned by tamils do not sell Ceylon Tea these days. So try some thing else.

  10. Bulto

I would love to see some day giants like INDIA or CHINA erase their name and rename it to BAHARAT or CHIN which is their original name.

These giants how nationalistic they may be but they are are not stupid to destroy a good brand name.

our leaders are pure genius ! This says lot about the glorious achievements in the past as portrayed in Maha Wamsa!

  11. R.Yogaseelan

The name CEYLON had been changed as SRI LANKA and we have had nasty, bitter.experiences in the near past. The popular”CEYLON TEA”will have a adverse effect.Does it sounds “good”to hear SRI LANKA TEA”?We are going to be a doomed paradise imminently.Heart felt condolences! Who is to bell the maniacs?

    • gamunu

Yogaseelan, It is the view of every Tamil that Ceylon sound better than SriLanka. In Ceylon there was disparity between Sinhalese and Tamils in the social heirarchy. That is what hurting you.

Yoga, modern generation do not recognise what and where Ceylon was. They all know where SriLanka is. Just look at any world map and ask a child to identify Ceylon. I bet you will get a true response. Also no one in the west is after Ceylon tea any more. That is a myth mthat you want to create. If that was so VP would have decimated this industry first as he did with the tourism industry.
What consumers in the developed countries are looking for are popular brands. Most of these popular brands are blended with tea leaves from several other countries. So get your facts right. I will challeneg you to name me any one who is looking for Ceylon Tea.
It is not the change from Ceylon to SriLanka that caused mayhem. It is your inability to live side by side with other communities. We will become a paradise once again God willing!!
For me it is imparetive to save our national heritage than colonial influence.

  12. ANOTHER BRAINLESS ONE IN CABINET HAS OFFERED THIS IDEA TO INCREASINGLY NERVOUS AND FEEL UNSTABLE PRESIDENT.

PRESIDENT MAHINDA IS A RARE MAN IN SRI LANKA,WHO HAS DONE A GOOD JOB BY ERADICATING TERRORISM.BUT HE SEEMS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE NORMAL SENSE.

SRI LANKANS NEVER SAY DURING THEIR NORMAL CONVERSATIONS ‘SRI LANKA.ALLWAYS IT IS ‘LANKA’ OR ‘LANKAWA’.

SOME IN CABINET WANT PRESIDENT LOOKS A ‘JOKER’.ALSO HE WANT TO DAMABE TO LANKA ECONOMY DEFERENT WAYS.FIND OUT THIS ‘ENEMY WITHING BEFORE HE DO MORE DAMAGES TO ECONOMY AS WELL AS PRESIDENT MAHINDA’S GOOD NAME FOR HIS GOOD WORKS.

LANKA’S REAL NAME IS HELADIWA.LATER CENTURIES OF TIMES CHANGED TO SERENDIB,LANKADEEPA AND CEYLON.NOW IT IS SRI LANKA.THIS IS THE ONLY NAME THE CITIZENS ARE NOT USING CPMPLETELY.IT IS USELESS TO HAVE A NAME WHICH IS NOT USING FULLY.

THE BEST NAME AS A MEMORABLE AND MUSICAL SOUND IS NO DOUBT’CEYLON’.IT GIVES PLEASENT SOUND.ALSO IT HELPS THESE FINE NAMES FOR BUSINESS PURPOSESS TOO.LOOK AT CLEAR JAPANESE DO BUSINESS,THEIR DIDN’T PUT JAPANESE NAMES OF DIFFICULT TO PRONOUNCE,KENWOOD,TOYOTA,HONDA,SHARP,HITACHI,LEXUS,SANYO,SONY ETC…,THESE MUSICAL SOUND NAMES ARE ONE OF MAIN REASONS THEIR POPULERITY AMONG CUSTOMERS.

SRI LANKANS DON’T BECOME FOOLS LIKE BEFORE.USE THE BRAIN NOW.

  13. Percy Mandawala

We will get nothing by changing names. This is just a another attempt to show fake patriotism and deceive the public.
The word ‘Ceylon’ had a better acceptance and recognition throughout the world than the word ‘Srilanka’.

    • Gamunu Wijesinghe

That is your opinion. Sad to see it coming from a Sinhalese.

    • gamunu

Percy, I am sorry I cannot agree. The generations that were associated with Ceylon have now disappeared. the world has changed a lot since. It is myth that the West accepts Ceylon better. Britain may be hurt but the world dynamics have changed. Countries are increasingly unshackeling tethers these days. This change will make no significant effect on our stand in the world. It is the people who want to divide the nation who are hurt and angry. Diaspora will use this to for their advantage, yet they were happy to use EALAM as the name for their dream.

It would be interested to know what VP would call his kingdom had he succeed. Would he have used a Wetern sounding name insted of EALAM or EAZHAM? So why do you worry?
You are SriLankan so leave aside your political ideology and be proud to face external challenges as a proud SriLankan.

  14. I Hussein

I cannot understand these natak. Why changing history.
Let us develop and compete with other nations.
India never change its name to ‘Hindustan’ or ‘Bharat’ and never took English medium away from schools. With that india transformed into a super power from a poverty nation. We used laugh at their english and today we are bowled out by them.
Sad part is we are too foolish to understand or learn anything.

  15. Bonggo

In Sinhala the country is known as Lankawa and officially Sri Lanka.

    In Tamil It is Ilankai.

So let our beautiful country be known as Ceylon internationally, just like Nippon is Japan for us and Bharath is India.

  16. Gangdhi

Ceylon means land of the Sinhala people. It is only people from the Indian sub continent who called Ceyon Sri Lanka.
Middle East people, Europeans and Chinese called Ceyon the land of Sinhala.

  17. NICKY KARUNARATHNA,FORMER INTELLIGENCE OFFICER OF A WELL KNOWN INTERNATIONAL AGENCY

This is to put another nail on to the coffin of Tamil racism, bigotry, ultra-nationalism, ego and finally make Tamil also feel like others and they also human and not God choosen race as they think as morning to dawn going on and on with Tamil, Tamil and nothing but everything is Tamil. Why I say this? Everywhere they live in the globe they don’t want to use the country’s real identity and name as “Sri Lanka”. They always say “Ceylon” – reasons only known to them due to their overwhelming hatred about Sinahlese and Sinhalese language though we love them and giving all-encompassing compassion and kindness. Hence this is a good move and good vision by the present govt to protect the country for another 2500 years I suppose.

  18. AQ

So the world famous “CEYLON TEA” will be called “SRI LANKA TEA”. Wow fantastic move. Just killed a brand name that put an intentity on our Tea for 150 years. Brilliant! Even an Ad giant like Ogilvy & Mather could not have done anything better.

    • gamunu

AQ don’t talk. No one these days are going behind Ceylon Tea. Not even Diaspora Tamils. Every one is buying popular brands made out of blending leaves from different parts of the world. If you need to know more, just log into Google about Tea industry. You will no doubt get a better picture. Ceylon Tea was a brand that was used in the by gone era. People now look for economical products just as with coffee. They do not look for the country of origin. It is the Brand name that the consumers are after. So do not bring this tame reason. it may work with people who have no real knowledge of the customer need in developed countries. I have lived overseas so I know what I write.

  19. Jo

Change it back to Ceylon. And change the currency to the Ceylon Dollar – which will be Rs 100 = 1C$
Make English the main language – and we will become another Singapore…..
Where the majority is Chinese, and speak Mandarin, but the national anthem is in Malay and they all speak English.
    :-)

    • Ananda

English as the main language is the way forward – which countries speak sinhala?? – oh yes – just sri lanka – whats the point?? Future generations from poorer backgrounds will be speaking broken ‘singhlish’ for years

    • gamunu

Dream on Jo!!!!!!! Just for you information the entire world know what SriLanka is. No tourist is seeking a holiday in CEYLON any more. It is SriLanka they are coming for a vacation. Some “odd balls” like you have gone into a “Time warp”.
looks like you are suffering from Singapobhia. That may be the reason you want a comparison.

  20. Kichi Banda

    ko ara Gamunu Wijesinghe

  21. Gu Wijesinghe

Gamunu Wijesinghe you must be not eating POL these days . Try it at Rs.60.00 a nut because you are a NUT case after all……….

    • gamunu

Gu, your name suits you. Is it your inabilty to put forward a rational view that makes you to become sarcastic or have you too got an Inferiority Complex?

  22. Ceylon is number six and the country was florishing with wealth.e coming to ceylon from India and the name kallathoni . After changiubf to sri lanka the total is eighteen (nine) this number eighteen brings down fall . Even the late president Honble Premadasawanted to change it as shri. Many nemoroligist has written about this change in so many articles.

  23. Patriot

These are merely cheap tricks of a bankrupt regime. What’s worst is that reading some peoples comments here. How blind people can be. Such people who air anti western sentiments are just a bunch of fools who are Mahinda’s puppets. Wake up you lot. We have a long way to go before we can offord to point fingers at the west. Just see where we are and see where they are. Stop complaining and blaming the west for everything and start working hard to build a paradise. Those who are cardboard patriots are the very ones who are holding this country down from progressing further.

    • gamunu

Patriot, you are entitled to your views but calling people with different views as a “bunch fools” shows your idiocy. I did not want to call you this but since you consider to be clever than the rest, I am forced to call you such. In my view you have no knowledge of world issues than an average Farmer. of course I want to see my country developed. It is people like you who criticise any developments if they are not being approved by the super powers. What have you seen so far of the western influence in sriLanka? They looked on merrily while we were destrying ourselves. They were only interested in supplying arms and prolonging wars to the detriment of the nation. What they want are people like you to suck them. Until we are free from their shackles we will be held down by these super powers. Quit calling a patriot. You are disgrace to that term. We can build a nation and a paradise if we all united and work for the nbetterment of the nation. We do not need lectures and interference from others unless assistance.

You have to wake up and see the truth. Just because you are an urbanite who value western ethics don’t expect others to follow you.

The recent events that took place in SriLanka should

  24. Gamini

Dont criticise the colonialist, at least they did something to our motherland. What did our so called patriotic politicians do since 1948. These so called Sri Lanka politicians from the sinhala, tamil and muslim community ruined the country and continuing to ruin further.

Very soon our country will be SRI SOMALIA.

    • gamunu

Colonial masters got what they wanted from the empire. They got the best from our mother land. That is why they are so rich now. They left us with a legacy that we had to face ever since. One such thing is the economy. This was tailor made to meet the needs of consumers in the developed world. For that they used cheap labour in our country. That is what they did for us. We had no oil for them to worry about. If we had oil resereves we would still be under the controls of the masters. There was no parity and nations like ours bacame part of the supply chain to satisfy their needs. In return what we got was pittance. We had to rely on imports for our basic needs. For this we became icreasingly reliant on Tea, rubber, Garments etc. Tea is not an essentail commodity. We are lumbered with this now and part of our megre income comes from this. I am not blaming on the west on every thing but they too were a cause for our predicament.

I totally agree with you that our politiciam]ns fom all parties and races have ruined the nation with their corrupt ways. Even now unless there is a radical change in the parliament system the rot will continue. That much i agree with you.

The world has changed from the days of independance. And the challenges are massive. Hopefully with the end of terrorism some good may come.

  25. Gu Wijesinghe

It is nice to read positive comments except the comments made by one Gamunu Wijesinghe , IT seems this Guy is a RAJAPAKSE and not a Wijesinghe.

  26. mikew

It should be replaced to SORRY LANKA

  27. lanka putra

Guys do not panic. I live in Australia. When we want a good cuppa , we buy DILMAH tea. This is the most poular tea over here. Call it by any other name ( Sri Lankan tea or Ceylon tea ) , DILMAH tea is the original ( unblended ) tea. Trust me , I do not work for Dilmah. Their marketing has worked well here. Even the SL cricket team wears Dilmah on the shirt. It is time Dilmah promoted Sri Lanka as well. Initially , I undertsand that SL govt. gave a lot of tax payers money to promote Dilmah. So it is nothing but fair Dilmah do their bit. LONG LIVE SRI LANKA ! Have a fair debate but do not insult each other. God bless ya.
