Lasantha Murder Case Drags On Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied

Police, on Wednesday, informed the Mount Lavinia courts that investigations were being carried out based on information regarding the involvement of a former member of Army Intelligence and a garage owner in the assassination of the Editor of The Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickrematunge.
Police informed this to court when the case was taken up before Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Nirosha Fernando last Wednesday. Yesterday (8) marked the second anniversary of Lasantha Wickrematunge’s  assassination
Wickrematunge was killed by men on motorcycles as he was driving to work. They blocked his car’s path near Malagalage Primary School, smashed its window and  beat him with a steel weapon. He was taken unconscious to the Kalubowila hospital where he died from his head injuries. Several witnesses said no shots were heard and no bullet impacts were found. Strangely, the autopsy findings have never been released.
The attack took place just several hundred meters from an air force checkpoint but the assailants were able to get away. One of the motorcycles was found by the police but it is still not known if it was of any help in tracking down the assailants.

Meanwhile, counsel appearing on behalf of the accused informed court that the Criminal Investigations Department, which conducted investigations into the suspects arrested 11 months ago, had handed over the reports of those investigations to the Terrorist Investigations Department (TID).
The counsel pointed out that no progress reports had been produced before court.
Accordingly the Chief Magistrate ordered officers of the TID to produce a progress report on investigations carried out to date on the 14th of this month.
The investigation into Wickrematunge’s murder was initially assigned to Mount Lavinia Police Station but a police source said it was not given any special priority. The authorities said four teams were assigned to this case and to an attack on MTV, but no significant results have been reported even two years later.
The case will be taken up again on the 14th of this month.

A Chronology Of Events Since Lasantha Was Killed On January 8, 2009…
Government officials, including Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, said at the end of January in 2009 that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would announce “very important details” about the murder in February that year. But since then, there has been nothing to confirm the existence of a political will to solve the case. Wickrematunge’s family and colleagues have been forced to conclude that the authorities have no interest in arresting either the perpetrators or instigators.
Wickrematunge’s widow, Sonali Samarasinghe, said in an open letter to Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne in mid-March that: “There has still been no credible breakthrough in the investigation. No murder weapons, no suspect, no post mortem report has yet been made public.”
Wickrematunge, was never given the police protection he requested.
The police in 2009 announced the arrest of a suspect but it was just a passer-by who stole Wickrematunge’s mobile phone from the scene of the murder. This suspect after being held since 2009 was released in December 2010.
The authorities have made contradictory and in some cases defamatory comments about Wickrematunge. The President’s brother, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said in an interview with a foreign TV station: “Who is Lasantha? A tabloid publisher. Why is the world worried about one man? He criticized everybody. So everybody had a reason to kill him.” He went on to make similar comments to the Australian TV station SBS: “He has antagonised so many people. He had criticised and reported wrong things about all persons.”

I trust Lasantha and believe his vedict on his murder. I believe that whom he accussed is a real murderer and no one else. It is a deliberate attempt to cover up within democratic frame work. Only those who are morally corrupted can be silent on the delay/denial of justice.

True Lasantha has antagonised so many people. He had criticised and reported wrong things about all persons. But that dosent mean to kill him .
Fonseka knows some thing about this killing . He is also hiding the truth why?

what about the Rs. 182 million given by Basil to Thamilchelvan in the Vanni jungles to prevent the Tamils from voting for the UNP. Go and check your records before you point fingers at Lasantha. This was negotiated by Tiran Alles.

      Celine:

you should contact WikiLeaks instead writing comment here? There is no good crime and bad crime. Crime is crime. Threatening journalist or any innocent is a crime if a country has real democracy. Why not ask your Rajapasas to clear your doubt.?

OUR ONE AND ONLY DR.MERVYN SILVA, HAD STATED SOME TIME AGO,
THAT HE KNEW WHO LASANTHA’S KILLERS WERE. WELL, WHAT ARE THE POLICE WAITING FOR ? WHY CAN’T THEY TAKE HIM TO THE “FOURTH FLOOR” AND QUESTION HIM ? WELL, THERE IS DEFINITELY INDICATION THAT IT WAS DONE BY THE GOVERNMENT,SINCE HE WAS BECOMING TOO MUCH OF A NUISANCE TO THEM. THE PRESS WAS BURNT.
FROM NEWS REPORTS WE ARE AWARE OF THE ABSOLUTE INEFFICIENCY OF THE POLICE IN SOLVING CRIMES. PERHAPS IT IS ALL DUE TO OUR POLICE SERVICE TOO BEING HEADED BY ANOTHER PH.D.
THE ONLY THING THE POLICE ARE DOING, ARE HARASSING MOTORISTS,
AND MAKING A FAST BUCK. WELL, WITH THE HIGH “C-O-L” THEY TOO HAVE NO OPTION. LETS WAIT FOR WHAT “WIKILEAKS” WILL SAY!!!!!
IS THERE A JUSTICE SYSTEM IN SRI LANKA? DOESN’T APPEAR THERE IS!!
“JUSTICE DELAYED IS CERTAINLY JUSTICE DENIED”
LET ME WARN THE GOVERNMENT, WHATEVER RELIGION WE PROFESS, THERE IS A THING CALLED “DIVINE RETRIBUTION”
I AM NO SOOTHSAYER OR A PROPHET OF DOOM.
SOON THERE IS GOING TO BE A VERY SERIOUS CALAMITY!!!!!!!!!

It is interesting to analyse the responses of law and order in SL, totally manipulated by the govt.

When they want to punish an opponent- SF
      -Law works in lighting speed.
-Evidence, witnesses, cases etc brought to many courts ( military, civil etc)
-many court cases simultaniously, so that he can be found guilty at least in some
-Will arrest even with out a charge sheet ready
-Full blast of punishment like common criminal despite enormous service

When they want to protect the guilty- Lasantha killers, Mervyn, Many political crooks, KP
      - Law limps for years and absolute lethagy
-Despite mountain of evidence nothing happens
-Most cases even no mention law being activated at all!
      -Guilty are given promotions
-Despite billions of govt. money lost, not a single culprit
-Even if some actions would have been 1000 yrs ago, they are dismissed saying ‘play acting’
-Police look impotent when crooks carry battons while they happily look on
-Not a single political crook has been charged for decades !!

LANKA- A LAND LIKE NO OTHER !!!!!

It is very Simple….The President and the Govt is expected to provide security to all people and belongings of the country.
More so, the president is the minister for defence also..So the President MUST take the responsibility to find the culprits without any further delay and also Ensure that we don’t have similar incidents in the future.
Over to you Mr President .

  8. Lasantha’s killers will never be brought to justice. It is a well known factor. Each and every citizen in Sri Lanka knew who were the killers. Killing is ordered by one, planned by another and executed by few ordinary thugs who are in the pay packet of the regime.

    Lasanthas Killing the TRUTH……….

Many years ago Reggie Candappa told a yarn in a club in Nuwara Eliya.
    \
He said an Old Man was going round in London late in the night with a lamp in his looking for something.A passer stopped by and inquired as to what he was looking for and the old man replied I am looking for the TRUTH> out came the reply that truth was never known here since the death of Winston Churchill. But the passer by suggested why dont you take your lamp and go to a far off country in the east called Sri Lanka-You are sure to find the TRUTH.

The Old man was going round now looking for something on arrivalo in Sri Lanka.A passer by inquired as to what he was looking for.And the reply:

I AM LOOKING FOR MY LAMP!.

    Well said ncw,
Next time the Man should be directed to Temple trees. He would find not only the mangled lamp but thr ghosts from the killing fields of NE.

  11. selvi

Lasantha named his killer in his last editorial. He also said about who would pray for the sins committed by that killer. However, I do not think that God will not accept such prayers. Sooner or later these sins have to be paid back.
