The Sunday Leader

Wimal’s Flight Of Fancy

By Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema

The extravagance of NFF Leader and Housing, Construction and Engineering Services Minister Wimal Weerawansa has been exposed in the media and The Sunday Leader in the past.
This time around, Weerawansa’s extravagance has reached sky high with his decision to opt for a Sri Lanka Air Force Y-12 aircraft to transport him from Ampara to Colombo when his vehicle had broken down.
When government ministers in the past have opted to travel in alternative vehicles or even in police vehicles or their back up vehicles in the event of a vehicle breakdown, Weerawansa, as usual, opted for VVIP treatment.
Weerawansa’s extravagant life style since his days in the JVP even led to the party taking disciplinary action against him along with several other issues that eventually led to his defection from the JVP in 2008.
The luxurious lifestyle of the Weerawansas is in stark contrast to Wimal Weerawansa’s preaching to the masses. It is unethical for a government minister to act in such an extravagant manner when asking the poor masses to tighten their belts in the face of a rising cost of living in order to facilitate the ‘government’s development agenda.’
His air ride to Colombo from Ampara had taken place on October 25, 2010. State Engineering Corporation had met the expense for the ride.
On October 27, 2010, Staff Officer Air Operations I, Wing Commander S.A.D. Wijeratne from the Sri Lanka Air Force had written to the Chairman of the State Engineering Corporation.
The Air Force had informed that it had operated a Y-12 aircraft for the requested flight.
The Air Force had requested the State Engineering Corporation to forward a cheque for Rs. 181,042.01 (US$ 1,631.45) for the Y-12 flight from Ratmalana-Ampara-Ratmalana on October 26, 2011.
The flying time according to the Air Force had been one hour and 40 minutes.
Wing Commander Wijeratne had also sent another letter to the State Engineering Corporation Chairman on October 27, 2010 that a cheque for Rs. 5,548.50 cents be forwarded as handling charges for the Y-12 flight.
On November 3, 2010, the Acting Deputy General Manager (HR and A), Ranjith Edirisinghe had presented a board paper to the Corporation under the subject “Approval for the aircraft charges for the Hon. Minister on 26.10.2010.”
Edirisinghe, in the board paper has explained that Minster Weerawansa’s official vehicle had broken down on the night of October 25, 2010 in Ampara. “At that situation his security staff could not get an alternative or a safe vehicle in a hurry…,” the board paper states.
According to the board paper, Weerawansa had to attend a ceremony that had been organised by the Engineering Corporation the following day (October 26, 2010) to commemorate the 91st birth anniversary of Deshabandu Vidyajothi Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe.
The ceremony had been organised at the Engineering Corporation head office and at the Janakala Kendraya in Battaramulla. Weerawansa was to be the chief guest at the events.
The board paper has stated that in such a situation, an aircraft was the only possible mode of transportation available for Weerawansa to return to Colombo.
“Sri Lanka Air Force Headquarters has sent us the cost of flight. The cost of flight is Rs. 181,042.01,” it states.
The board paper has recommended that the board of directors approve the payment to be made to the Air Force.
When The Sunday Leader inquired from Sri Lanka Air Force Captain Janaka Nanayakkara on whether the State Engineering Corporation had made the payment of Rs. 181,042.01, he said the Air Force had received the cheque for Weerawansa’s air ride.
Repeated attempts by The Sunday Leader to contact the Chairman, State Engineering Corporation, Prof. Ashu Marasinghe failed and the media division at the Corporation also failed to answer the queries.
It is however interesting that Weerawansa requested the Engineering Corporation to foot the bill for his air ride on the grounds that his urgency to return to Colombo was to attend a ceremony organised by the Corporation.
Therefore, it would be wise for the Corporations under Weerawansa’s purview to take note of that they too may have to foot various transport bills of the Minister in the event he is to attend a function organised by them.

Thanks for reporting. We will decide.

    • Dr.Herath

This minister is a nincompoop!!, those who voted for his are non less than nincompoops too.
      cheers
      Herath,
      USA

      • Moosala Horawansa

Dr Herath..Agree with you Completely and more.
This gutless, immoral scoundrel with no moral or personal values is not fit even to be in our Lankan prisons leave alone be in our parliament as a minister.
‘The President must take full and absolute responsibility for having such nincompoops as ministers where it appears that there is a definite signs of hidden and/or corrupt reasons for such appointments.
Sri Lanka NEEDS a good and well deserved clean up of its political leaders and corrupt hooligans.
REMEMBER..They don’t own or control the people and the country..They are elected to be our Trusted servants for the good of the country and its people.
Do our leaders and politicians feel into this category.
If Not, why not.??..Do they desreve to be in office and continue or get kicked out one way or the other..

    • Motta Booruwansa

This wimal is an immoral waste of time with no principles befiitting even the canine.
Let’s not forget his preaching when he joined the JVP….wanted to uplift the lives of the common man and nothing extravagant.
Then he showed his true colours…not him, but his immoral wife as well…corruption and greed set in..Did the pole vault jump to join the present corrupt regime..purely to make money..and now his greed and pariah ways have no limits…These are the scum that we have elected.

  2. LELA

This buffoon is such a joke, yet our Sri Lankan clowns still vote for him. Don’t complain…….if you hate what is going on then make the change….time to get rid of these fellows like in Egypt.

    • Sanath Perusinghe

That will be the day, I will claim to be a proud Sri Lankan on that day . It is difficult to think that will take place. Remember “BEHAVIOUR BREEDS BEHAVIOUR”. Therefore under these politicians we are creating a highly corrupt society. Therefore. it is highly unlikely, the changes will happen in Sri Lanka like in Egypt.

  3. Chandima

    Quote-
‘At that situation his security staff could not get an alternative or a safe vehicle in a hurry…,”

I wonder if the security staff were in bullock carts, giving security !!

These crooks continue to plunder the country. The same minister would have been one of the ministers to give Rs 333 for a family devestated from floods in Colombo!

  4. Kushini

It is sad that even people of the calibre of ANS Kulasinghe have their memories abused for joy rides of political mavericks.

  5. Francis Liyanage

The Corporation has explained reasons for him to return next day very important matter.some time such matter is acceptable under the circumstance where many people were waiting next day event which he had to be their.

we do not forget one time sri lanka president send helicopter to take his Gotukola sambola from Colombo to Anuradapura capital just he was not in position to have his launch without that.we all knew that same period they use helicopter to disposal death body of one journalist to sea, we have many dirty history of our leaders.

    • Aslam

Just because one President does it that doesnt mean his trip is justified.
The reason Sri Lanka is suffering like this is because of such comments.
grow up and accept when your politicians make mistakes, only then will Sri Lanka develop. Dont live inthe past lets try to develop Sri Lanka by standing up for what is wrong.

    • rav

As things happened in past still do we have to do the same.
Dear Francis, Ra 181,000 to attend to this meeting. Yes he is the minister(without any knoledge), but do we have to pay for his ride. Let him pay. What impact brought as he was attended for that meeting.
This is unacceptable. These things want happen in western.
      From UK

  6. n.c.wijeratne

Soon he will be piloting his own jet-from here to enternity!

  7. td

Is Raturatna still looking for world bank plug?

  8. Geetha Gunatilake

Nothing wrong. His return to Colombo was urgent. So what ?

    • ANIL

HIS RETURN TO COLOMBO WAS URGENT ? HOW DO YOU KNOW ? ARE YOU A HENCHMAN OF THIS BLOATED MAN ? YOU CAN LICK THE BONES HE THROWS OUT BUT LIKE A FOOL DONT TRY TO DEFEND HIM . FOR US COMING TO MEET HIS WOMEN FRIENDS IS NOT AN URGENT MATTER

    • Keep

Are you a keep of his?

    • True SriLankan

to satisfy you, is it so

    • n.c.wijeratne

What was the indecent hurry, anyway!

    • Chandima

      Ooops….

      Nothing wrong !!!!
I wonder why he could not get back in the security vehicle ( unless they were in a bullock cart providing security) or hire a vehicle from the closest town.
Well, I could see many vehicles of political crooks breaking down in order to get air transport for ‘urgent’ matters !!!

    • Dylan

Urgent to be a chief guest ignoring the thousands of people made homeless by the recent floods living in temporary camps. What a shame to call yourself a politician !!!

  9. Wimal is bloating up, isn’t he?

  10. farook

Surely in this age when so many hiring companies are mushrooming, he could have easily got a leading company to provide the transport instead of spending such lavishly. They may have even provided a luxury car free of charge.
What has MR to say regarding this? He must be also doing the same thing so that the others under him also follow his footsteps. welcome to the miracle of Asia where anything and everything that the state does is done in the name of being a patriot to mother Lanka.

  11. Patric

This is the one time JVP’er who got around in a push cycle, now wants a air craft to transport him from Ampare to Colombo – what a shameless act to waste our money, when the govt. is giving us Senior Citizens pea nuts on our deposits. The Gods will teach such people a lesson in good time. I curse them

  12. Ranjit Silva

This is not a surprise coming from this so called “Great Champion of yhe Proletariat.” Lenin might be turning in his grave watching these antiques. The workers must sacrifice for extravagence of their so called leaders both in their public and private lives.

  13. Jothi

Nothing suprising about this Weerawansa. This is what he really is. Everybody knows that he he is wolf but trying t owear sheeps clothings. His deception is good for him and his family. Great out Weerawansa and dont ruin Sri Lanka.

  14. mihlar

    Rata Perata?

  15. Yakolis

Sri Lanka is internationally and locally in deep financial trouble, and we see Stooge Officials with Hyena like grins on their faces trotting out fairy stories to the gullible half starved public. A new Five Thousand Rupee note has been printed and the old Two Thousand and One Thousand Rupee notes have been reduced in size and reprinted. Soon the One Hundred Rupee note might end up as a coin. We are fast approaching Zimbabwe. But political jokers like Wimal don’t care two hoots.

If MR really cares for this country and its ordinary people he should ban unnecessary travel by ministers for political thamashas and say that such thamashas should be attended by a Local Politikka or a Henchman as representing the Minister. Otherwise the people might start thinking of Egypt.

  16. Reno

While 95% of the population is living under the poverty line starving and garbage and third world poor conditions, corrupt Ministers continue to cheat on the people.

  17. This is the way minister to develop our country. hurray! you tell us to tighten the belt and this is what you do?. I know you are liar anyway.

take a chance mate, otherwise you never board a plane.

  18. Thava

    Very good insight.

There are others too. Chambika’s rise from bullock cart to mercedes benz and Mervin’s weath from nowhere.

Champika has predicted his son will drive a four wealer. Luckily he did not say a private jet.

  19. vintage voter

KULASINGHE WAS THE GREATEST ENGINEER SRI LANKA PRODUCED. OTHERS MAY NOT AGREE WITH ME. I KNEW HIM PERSONALLY. AT ONE TIME AS CHAIRMAN OF THE PORT COMMISSION AND CHAIRMAN OF STATE ENGINEERING CORPORATION HE HAD THE LARGEST NUMBER OF PEOPLE WORKING UNDER HIM. THOSE WHO WORKED FOR HIM FELT HONOURED TO HAVE WORKED WITH HIM, SINCE HE DISCOVERED THE TALENT IN HIS ENGINEERS, APPRECIATED AND HARNESSED IT FOR THE BETTERMENT OF HIS COUNTRY. HARD TASK MASTER BUT STILL THEY LOVED HIM.
WHEN I SAW OLD STEEL IMPORTED FOR “FLYOVERS” I SAID, IF KULASINGHE.WAS THERE IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. IF KULASINGHE WAS THERE THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN HARBOURS BUILT ON LAND AND THEN SEA WATER BEING PUMPED INTO IT.
HE WOULD NOT BOW TO ANY POLITICIAN, AND HE WENT INTO TEMPORARY EXILE IN MALAYSIA.
IT IS AN INSULT TO THE MEMORY OF THIS “SMALL MAN” BUT “TALL AND GREAT” IN HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THAT THE SEC IS UNDER “OUR WANSA”
IT IS EVEN A GREATER INSULT TO HAVE HAD THIS “WANSA” AS CHIEF GUEST TO CELEBRATE HIS BIRTH ANNIVERSARY.
I AM SURE THAT THERE WILL BE THOUSANDS WHO WILL AGREE WITH ME. THIS “JOKER-WIMAL WEERAWANSA” MUST BE MADE TO PAY THE
    AIRCRAFT CHARGES.

  20. I have nothing against Mahinda Rajapakse, but I HATE this guy. When he appears on TV, I just walk away or switch off the set.

    • Ardneham

Very unfair – he is a prime patriot – the Presidential Pet – the Political puppy….

I plead for his personal rights to do whatever a state Minister is divinely

entitled to. This is Silly Lanka. Ever commentator here has a Vote – pl

use it and not await another “Egypt” which will never come.!!!

  21. Fairose

  26. True SriLankan

It hilarious these are the politicians( Mubaraks) came from a lower middle class family speak like pundit but number one hypocrit who struggling in their early days for their existance.

    suba anagathayak

  37. Well his car had broken down and there is no harm in him doing this. It’s not like he does it everyday or abuses. Please note that this is one of the most popular politicians and I am sure he knows well. Also with the war over this is a good way to keep and maintain our air force. Why do you people always have to look at the negative??

  38. athulathmudali

A person with iota of intelligence will not vote for a a person like Wimal. However over 50% of this country without even O. L.

  39. vintage voter

    WHAT HE PREACHES IS “SAMAJAWADHAYA”

  40. Lionel

All professionals are paying for crooks who are managing the fools’ paradise

  41. Bruz

Oh, common guys, please be civilised. He is an SL minister and had to be the chief guest at the function, alive & kicking. Can’t afford to travel by road & get exausted.
What’s wrong if he had used the service of our air force plane? No big deal.
See how many ministers & other jokers are accompanying our president when he flies around country to country ? Let Wimal sir enjoy little bit of cmfort travel.
These perks can nevr last long you know :) So make hay while sun shines.

  42. P.L.J.B.Palipana

Reading these comments and the article I found very senior engineers too wrote comments. Truly speaking this today’s State Engineering Corporation of SriLanka sahould be erased from the Construction Industry. We have enough private sector contractors to handle bulding projects competetively if the ministers, permanant secretaries, consultants do a perfect professional job.

    • Sanath Perusinghe

Not a good solution; It is like chopping of your own nose,, you know why.

  43. Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge

this guy is a low cast man i know his full pedigry

  44. Rover

This ‘Sathyakgrahaya’ had to rush to a ceramony in a hurry no matter what the cost. Do public works under his ministry get done in such a hurry.???

  45. Sanath Perusinghe

This minister fellow just like most others in the cabinet are uneducated political thugs. So we cannot expect better than this. This behaviour is inseparble from these political thugs. But I am surprised that the educated and highly decorated acdemics, engineers, doctors and other professionals alike are continuing to to pay homage to these incompetent uneducated and unrefined lot. They continue to vote for them and carry them on their shoulders to the podium and treat them like kings and queens. What a tragic comedy…..

  46. STEALING PETER TO PAY PAUL,

  47. P.L.J.B.Palipana

You are exactly correct Mr.Perusinghe. While the engineers are helping the politicians to steal public wealth and carry out very substandard construction activities the doctors are killing the Nation very silently. Sometimes ago a lady from Onegama, Polonnaruwa came to see a lady doctor during her private practice session. The lady was not treated and sent back because she could’t pay the full amount of the Fee. The nurse in-charge of the doctor told me that story.
I can’t understand the Future of SriLanka.

  48. Ratnam

Thanks for exposing Sunday Leader. Please continue your good job. I don’t blame Wimal but President for keeping such fools in the cabinet and in parliament. What do we do? Shall we blame our fate?
