Health Authorities Warn Of Rat Fever

Health authorities have issued a warning on the possible increase of leptospirosis also known as rat fever in the country.

The Health Ministry has said that several cases of rat fever have been reported from areas that were affected by the recent floods.

According to the Ministry, the number of rat fever cases has increased in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts.

The Ministry has called on the provincial health authorities to be vigilant of the disease in the areas that were affected by floods.

The Government Epidemiology Unit has said that the spirochetes leptospira that carries leptospirosis is normally found in paddy fields, canals, drains, contaminated streams, wells and rivers were possible leptospirosis breeding sites.
