Poseidon’s Wrath — An Intriguing Tale Of The 2004 December Tsunami
Lucky de Chickera has published his second book, titled Poseidon’s Wrath, a tale of fiction taking place around the catastrophic wave that crashed onto Sri Lankan shores in December 2004, and brought havoc on its people and the country.
The launch took place in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering in the auditorium of the Cathedral at Baudhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. Dyan Seneviratne, a former CEO of the Institute of Personnel Management, and presently the president of a leading corporate training company in business communications was the chief guest, and Punyakante Wijenaike, one of Sri Lanka’s best known English writers, a Graetian Award winner of 1994 and a Kalasuriya Class 1 Awardee was the guest of honour.
The story is about a fisher family living in Narigama, Hikkaduwa which was destroyed by the killer wave. The story also touches on the heartbreaking subject of human loss and how many thousands lost their lives in the west coast of Sri Lanka. Poseidon’s Wrath also talks about local and international drug peddlers and slave traders capitalising on the traumatised survivors in the aftermath of the tsunami.
Mythology is brought in with the god of the sea, Poseidon and the power he possesses. The story which is about the devastation brought on by the killer wave on the hamlet of Narigama and its fisher folk extends to the destroyed southern city of Galle, the devastated southern coastal belt, all in the company of international drug dealers and flesh traders, and ends up in a pulsating finale on the beaches of Matara on the night of 31st December of the same year. Lucky has dedicated this book to his late mother who passed away in August this year after a bout with cancer.
His first book A Tigress Of Kilinochchi has experienced a dream run amongst the English reading public in Sri Lanka with over 400 copies being sold in five months and he hopes that his second book will be as popular.
He is presently retired from active work after having spent over 40 years in a leading private corporate institution, and is now able to give time to his childhood passion of writing. He is currently working on his third book which he is planning to publish in the first half of 2011.
