Court Orders Temporary Suspension Of Website

The Pugoda Magistrate’s court has today temporarily suspended a private news website operating in the country pending a court hearing.

Magistrate Aravinda Perera has ordered that the activities of LankaeNews website be suspended until a court case against one of its journalists, Shantha Wijesuriya is concluded.

The Magistrate has also ordered the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to suspend the operations of the website temporarily.

Wijesuriya was arrested by the Kirindiwela police after the news website had allegedly published a story that was claimed to be in contempt of court.

Kirindiwela police have recorded a statement from Wijesuriya regarding a report compiled by him on a murder case that is being heard by the Pugoda Magistrate Court. The case involves two police officials accused of murder.

Wijesuriya has been further remanded until May 12.
