Environment Ministry To Declare Gin Oya Catchment Area A Protected Zone

The Environment Ministry has decided to declare the catchment area of Gin Oya in the Puttalam District a protected zone.

Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa had asked the Central Environment Authority (CEA) to make the necessary arrangements.

The decision had been made following the revelation that a special botanical species of “Ging Pol,” a mangrove plant that is unique to Gin Oya has come under threat due to human activity.

The matter had been revealed during a workshop conducted by the CEA at the Wennappuwa Divisional Secretariat to educate officials on solid waste disposal management under the Pilisaru programme.
