Ravi Tasked With Uniting Party

UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake was recently appointed National Organiser of the main Opposition party. The Sunday Leader spoke with him briefly about his new position.
Excerpts:
Q: What would you say are your most important tasks as national organiser?
A: My task is to ensure that the party is united. The friction needs to be removed, and the people need to be brought together into proper order, in order for us to have a winning streak.
Q: So you agree that there is friction between some factions within the party?
A: There are two or three people who are creating a faction. The friction from this needs to be corrected. But the UNP doesn’t have factions- it’s just two or three.
Q: Why do you think there is so much friction? What can be done to revive the party?
A: These are issues created by a handful of people for unknown reasons. We need unity if we are to stand up to the Government in power. The people are not able to live. Sri Lanka is in isolation internationally. There is a lot of hearsay about the Sri Lankan community. There is also a lot of propaganda from the Government- promises which are never delivered. The Opposition parties, all of them, need to bring people together and bring sanity into play.
Q: Your appointment as national organiser is somewhat controversial. In fact, there is now an ongoing court case against your appointment, saying it is unconstitutional. What is your reaction to this?
A: Well, I shouldn’t be commenting on this. But it is the first time since Rukman Senanayake took J.R Jayawardena to court in 1975 about leadership changes, that a faction from the same party went to court. We are taking the Government to court and trying to reduce petrol prices and electricity prices. We are trying to get them to keep their promises, to curb corruption and hedging. Instead, some people are taking the UNP to courts. Their insincerity is such that their lawyers are those representing the President. They talk of unity and before elections, bring up these type of things. In any case, we have a super set of lawyers, so we will see what happens. It must be noted that there were almost 60 to 70 appointments and there was a problem only with mine. So the situation is that there are people who basically create trouble against the party system. This is one of the challenges facing the party.
Q: Do you think you are up to the task ahead of you as national organiser?
A: Well, it is one of those tasks that I have been given. You know what they say, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
This is a joke ! Uniting a party cant be done by just appointing a person. Everyone needs to be committed to do this. The leader needs to take the responsibility of uniting the party.
This is a plus point for MR. UNP will never win election with Ravi as national organizer as much as Ranil as a leader. He is a imposter not understand feelings of commonpeople
Under Ranil leadership party never comes to power. Your appointment is done through back door. Professional man never accepts this position wrong channel. Up to now what you done to unite the party. You all came from the UPFA & spoil the UNP. Gamini Dissanayake brought the part to the track. Panditharatna, Daham Wimalasena, Wikrama Weerasooriya pillars of UNP. You have to bring this people back to party. I agree Sajith is too young. But there are no leadership man inside the party.

With people like Ravi at the top UNP will remain permanently in the opposition. Divisions are too deep and damage is severe. Ravi is not the man to become the national organiser.

Surely, the best man to unite ANY party. Like a true politician he is capable of telling more lies because his tongue is bigger than his mouth.

My family has supported the UNP for generations and everybody knows that Ravi Karunayake is the most unpopular person among the voters in Kotte. He is just a talker but not intelligent or suitable for the important post of National organiser. UNP is spirally downhill and we the die hard UNP supporters feel completely let down by the present impotent UNP leadership.
Ravi is in for a horrible surprise. He is about to lose whatever credibility he has among the UNPers. The problem with the UNP is Ranil. As long as Ranil leads the UNP even if God himself were to be the National organizer UNP will still lose. Ravi is about to find this the hard way. Everyone who supported ranil realized this and turned against him – Johnston, Rajitha etc etc… When ravi realizes this, even he might leave the UNP…
Ranil is a JOKE and the Curse of the UNP. The only person who wants Ranil to be the leader is MR!!!!!
