IGP Resigns
Inspector General of Police, Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya has today resigned from the post.
Police Spokesperson SP Preshantha Jayakody stated earlier in the day that the IGP has expressed his desire to retire from service in order to pursue further studies in Russia.
However, the Defence Ministry by afternoon today confirmed that IGP Balasuriya has resigned from his post.
The Ministry stated that the IGP’s resignation creates history in public accountability in Sri Lanka.
According to police sources, Senior DIG N.K. Illangakoon was likely to be appointed as the next IGP.
Balsuriya’s resignation comes soon after the police attack on FTZ workers who were protesting against the proposed pension scheme in Katunayake two days ago. Two police officers have already been taken into custody over that attack that left a large number of workers injured.

Not this “Poor Man” , Minister must has to be resined. This “Poor Man” was another “Pupet Government Servant” among this “Pupet Show”. But he is a wise man.
IGP is just a pawn in this game of politial chess
Hello..Taking policeman’s in to custody is looking like Shakespeare’s drama. They have done what defence secretary has told them to do so who should be taken in to custody officers or the man in civil cloths. The international community is watching all this drama and very soon all these dictators will have to face the music.
@Parakrama
international community will do nothing, it did nothing when 300,000 people trapped in war zone , it did nothing when 200,000(the remaining onces) were detained in camps against their will for 2 years.
U THINK INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY WILL RESPOND FOR 1 DEAD PERSON?…LOL
good comment
S/L Police is a corrupt lot, look at the number of police officers on roads, they absolutely do sweet nothing, its the survival of the fittest, you cannot simply drive in Colombo today…with 3 wheelers going all over Roads, some drive over the pavements, bus drivers are a law unto themselves, most of the bus owners are senior Police officers…Has this IGP taken any measure/ action to at least correct these…understand that 50 % or more of 3 wheel drivers dont have a valid licence to drive…do these Police guys check????? they are well paid with perks but do not work, and more are absolutely corrupt….so who should take responsibility for all these ?????? This IGP hasnt done a thing after assuming his position…I would welcome his resignation….
who is going to “Jail” this time, not the “Militery Chief” , but the “Police Chief”.This all happened because of one “Foolish Guy” is manuplating the country, making the country “Backwards”.
WATS THE POINT IGP, ur retiring anyway. i dont know whether u retire or resign, coz government news says u retire.
ANYWAY,WHO CARES, SURE U’D GET A DIPLOMATIC OFFICE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY AS A DIPLOMAT.
poor dude Roshan Chanaka is gone, but ya, who cares
The who should be REMOVED is the man in CIVIL clothing, NOT IGP….Sooner or later the cards are going to be turned and the bunch of LOVING BROTHERS will be GONE> Time for celebration.
This is a very rare event, for someone to take responsibility for the acts under them and resign. In SL, the general attitude is for no one to take responsibility what ever the disaster.
But I wonder in this instance the resingnation should come from higher up the ladder for giving orders!!!!
You are a great Officer and a Gentleman
Several politicians from the area who were at the FTZ on Monday, blamed the workers for provoking the police and justified the firing. Then they attended the funeral and said some selfish political parties caused the tragedy. The IGP resigned admitting the breach of law. However,he will be duly rewarded for saving his superiors.
You know who should Resign? is Gotabaya an unelected family member who thinks he is a representative of our people. This poor Balasuriya was under this Gotas Thumb. Do you remember the Weerwansa Episode? when the police were subjected to humiliation. This episode is recorded on internationl TV and radio channels.. Sorry Mr Editor you can edit my thoughts . I hope you are still an independant news paper.
You must resign when violating the court order SSP Jayawardena matter.
The IGP born in 1953, is on annual extensions of service beyond his mandatory date of retirement in 2008.
Hence he cannot “resign” but can only retire.
This canard of his so called “resignation” as an “honourable” public servant, taking the blame for his suordinates’ actions is a ‘whitewash’ by the defence ministry.
He should NOT be allowed to “resign” but should be interdicted pending full inquiry regarding the incident.
The polce officers involved too, should have been interdicted.
The blame for this shooting incident, may lie with his superviser/superior officer who is trying to ‘wriggle out from under’.
The Rs.One Million “compensation” too, is to prevent the victim’s family demanding redress.
In western democracies, there is a Panel of Independent Persons appointed by the minister to inquire into “police excesses”.
In sri lanka, police “investigate” themselves.
So far, there is no report of an inquest/inquiry into the death of the worker who died due to police shooting, AND others who were injured.
All are AFRAID to inquire about this.
This is the state of fear in sri lanka today.
