  1. Reality

Need to check how many hours this officer had been assigned duties without rest. The superior officer should be taken to task if the time is excess.

  2. Lal.Fernando

How does anybody know that this fire arm is loaded? If so this is very dangerous. The officer should be reprimanded.

  3. Sherwin

I’m not a police fan as such, but to publish this isolated incident seems unfair.Mind you for what they get paid !-Come on !!

  4. Yehiya-Doha

There are major shortage of human resources in Police department. He may working more than 24 hrs.

  5. Clueless

Come on “Leader”… how irresponsible is this? maybe this poor guy is nearing the end of a really long shift. And maybe he was not the only officer on duty. And maybe he has the weapon safety switch on. Or maybe he was unwell.

I know the police have been in the news for the wrong reasons in recent times, but they almost certainly act on orders. Orders handed down by senior officers.

This bloke to me does not look like one those ‘senior officers’. How can you just blatantly say ‘a policeman snoozes at a checkpoint with a loaded gun in his lap’? Do you know the exact circumstances when this picture was taken? Who is the photographer? Was it a staff photographer at the “leader”? Or could it be a fellow policeman who has a feud with this person and snared him to ‘snooze’ awhile so he could take a picture to do him harm??

What I’m trying to say is, that this policeman can be clearly identified in this picture. And it puts him in a very difficult position since you are a national newspaper.

You should have masked his eyes at least!!!

These gentlemen, endure hours upon hours of hard labour manning these checkpoints. Being as inconvenient as it may be, some have even sacrificed their lives in the past at these same checkpoints. Just so YOU and I can ”snooze”.

I just feel for this guy because this picture being published could very well mean he will be jobless very soon!! So i hope you good people at the “Leader” can live with that!!

Also since you are so bold, why not post more compromising pictures of our dearest politicos/ senior gov officials?? I shall have no reservations on that!! :)

    • Nationalist

Don’t you realise that your tax money pays the salaries of the service personnel. Would you tolerate an employee sleeping at your workplace if you were the owner of such an establishment??

      • Clueless

        @ Nationalist:

I agree with you. However, I prefer corrective measures be taken from “top-down”. Not the other way around…

But my real concern here is that this particular police officer can be clearly identified and thus recognized. Without knowing the exact circumstance (there could be many scenarios as I have mentioned above… He doesn’t seem to be robbing a bank nor is he shooting at protesters), it could be considered a great injustice if this officer will have to face a barrage of social problems as a result. Which he undoubtedly will I’m afraid…

      • NAMAL

GET A LIFE. THIS GUY MUST BE WORKING..MAYBE 24 HOUR SHIFT OR MORE THAN THAT. WHO KNOWS.

      • sg

People are not slavers like this police men to give overloaded duty hours for others safeguard. Their should be a machanism , to how get the maximum duty with maximum human satisfaction of workers.

    • Epa

I truly agree with “clueless´´ and Piyal. One needs to think of the circumsatnces and background which led to this poor guy´s situation to fall into slumber. Perhaps long hours of work!!.

      • Muzham

Unless you are a habitual lazy man, sleep does not come when you want. I am sure, you all would have seen in your daily life, how much they are exposed to the sun riding on bicycles and in some instances motor bicycles. Theri work is tough, dangerous and thankless. They have to follow the orders of their bosses, the politicians etc. When on duty away from their far away offices, they are not provided with proper allowances for food, convenience etc. Their life is difficult, they worksometimes more than 24 hours without overtime. They are not privileged like the politicians. So, please do have sympathy towards them as it is already a tough life for them. I am sure, if they have a choice, they will leave the job in the first instance.
        muzham

    • Comments of many seem sympathetic. But the picture shows reality. Good job by the photographer.

    • kudu

snared him to snooze ha ha ha

masked his eyes tell me your joking man

the exact circumstances Is it not obvious

      look at the positive side
make him the poster child for overworked ,underpaid policeman
and lets try to improve the police force

  6. devamitta

maybe the sleep of the innocent? :-). Lets all see if we can make a snapshot of a sleeping yournalis or photografer it would be fun!

  7. Not fare to publish these kind of images
How do you know his mentality – after long hours of work without a break
or some kind of a illness he may be going thru
    not fare at all
this innocent guy might face certain reprimand due to this irresponsible
    act of journalism

  8. Your tax rupees put to good use?

WHEN OUR LEADERS ARE SNOOZING ALL THE TIME, DOES IT MATTER IF A POOR COP SNOOZES FOR AWHILE.

  10. dagobert

lets not criticise the police all the time.
lets come up with proposals how to improve that lot as we need to live with the police all our lives.

Lets begin with a column by Lal Wickremetunge.

    • rod rogers

dagobert: you are an idiot of the highest degree. lets not criticize them??? what are you writing? the cops could never do their jobs as long as the MR family is running the show. there is always interference from the gov’t and the head honchos are appointed by the donkeys in the government. how can they do their work. for a minute think where the country is going. the MR clan has depleted the whole country of all the wealth and put all the money in their pockets in California, U.S. what else do the people do. Velu took all the money and enjoyed himself and tried to surrender and got his backside whacked, likewise one of these days MR also………..I hope a brave Sinhalese man will rise up to the occassion.

  11. Rohan

oya pinthura dala asaranayage rassawath gahala yai.

  12. luxshman Mendis

These innocent men are put to work for 12 to 15 hours a day, and when he is not in the good books of the officer in charge may 15 to 18 hours what can they ever do. This is the pathetic situation of the country now. Jayaweva to Rajapakse and
    clan.

  13. Wimalasena Yapa

There is no excuse for dereliction of duty. He should be suspended. What if all the cops plea for mercy after caught napping?

  14. Shiva

SUNDAY LEADER IS FAMOUS FOR THIS KIND OF CHEAP THINGS
    ANTI SRI LANKAN NEWSPAPER

  15. shakira

This is a disgraceful photo – not for the policeman on duty but for the person who published it – is this the way we thank our service personnel who sacrifice thier lives for us every minute of every day to keep us safe – come on!!!!!!!!! HAVE YOU NEVER SLEPT ON THE JOB!! SHAME ON YOU PHOTOGRAPHER!!

  16. janaka

I read lost of comments on this picture, some are can be true or wrong. I left sri lanka 3 rears before & i know the facilities been given to the police(not to the people having high ranks). But i see the policemen over here every rank been treated as same. that’s is the different which u are seen in this picture.

  17. Sunil Jaysun

    SUNDAY LEADER-

THIS IS UTTER HUMILIATION- TAKE OUT THIS PICTURE AT LEAST NOW.

yOU MUST HAVE HAD A GOOD LESSON ALREADY-

HOW MUCH THE COUNTRY IS SPENDING ON THIS , BASED PURELY ON
GOSSIP WHICH YOU PUT ON PRINT.

  18. Gamini Edirisinghe

well done leader. Leader has the guts to publish this. We, Sri Lankans don’t have the guts to face our own reality, that is why we are screaming to remove this photo.

  19. Subrakasosnaka

This is the state of the country. One example is enough to prove how our security and policing works.

  20. Shafraz

    Dear Editor,

Dont think that you have Published something very Important/Heroic, all readers are not fools mostly you dont have anything exempt allegation towards the
    government.
definitely the Picture cannot be fully truthful of the actual incident it could be a Resting Officer in a barrack after the replacement is in Place for no officer will sleep like this exposed this is back end shot

  21. MotleyFOOL

    Dear Sunday Leader Journalist,
How about some investigative journalism that unearths our political hoodlums who snooze and plunder our country while on the job. Instead you pick on a poor “Ralahamy” striving and putting his life on the line to protect yours and my security. Do you know what this poor constables circumstances are/were? The man is a human being. To a superficial journalist, perception may be reality? Get LOST the Sunday Leader!!! why not suggest some solutions to the problem that making a stink out of a mole hill. At least, this “Ralahamy” holds on to this weapon rather than leasing his weapon to those underworld gangs who are orchestrating violence, murder and mayhem in cahoots with their political henchman. With the demise of a greats like Lasantha, look what the Sunday Leader has stooped to? Shame on you journalist!!!

    • DO YOU THINK LASANTHA WOULD HAVE CONDONED THIS PAID SLEEP? HIS PAPER DOES HIS WISHES. SORRY, BAD LUCK FOR RALAHAMY.

    • Ma-Rout-Ti

      MotleyFOOL

Thanks for your response – I am a relatively new reader of this rag parading as a news site. I am glad to hear that during Lasantha’s time, this place was actually worthy of the name “news site”

What I read now is basically bitter articles (with a few exceptions) with little news content but plenty of nastiness and vendettas

Clearly the new “leaders” at the helm have a lot to answer for

  22. Mahinda's friend

The ex IGP was caught sleeping on the job many times, why can’t this constable do the same? even when their eyes are open they don’t catch anyone. So let him sleep.

  23. Ajith Perera

ISN’T THESE POLICE GUYS ARE PAID BY IUR TAX MONEY? OF COURSE THIS GUY WOULD HAVE BEEN WORKING GUARDING A MP’S HOUSE FOR 36 HOURS BEFORE HE TOOK OVER THIS CHECK POINT. SOME HAS TO WORK AS LABOUROUS AND SOME HAS TO WORK AS SECURITY GUARDS FOR VIP. SOME EVEN SEXUALLY ASAULTED BY THE SUPERIOR OFFICERS. THIS HAPENNS IN ARMY, BANY, AIRFORCE, POLICE AND AMONG BUDDHIST MONKS. RECENTLY ONE SENIOR MONK WAS CAUGHT RAPING A SMALL MONK AND THE SMALL MONK WAS ADMITED TO THE HOSPITAL AS HE WAS BLEEDING HEAVELY FROM HIS RECTOM.

  24. san

If you fall sleep, sleep!! what is wrong with that. We have seen even many great leaders of world felt sleep during important meetings. It looks like sunday leader camara men are roaming here and there for these kinds of pictures.

  25. dagobert

Wimalasena Yapa……..Policeman’s lot does a thankless job. Not only in Sri lanka but all over the world.
This Cop too is a human being like you.
have you taken into consideration the circumstanced of his worl on that day.
Dereliction of duties…. Point it at the some 40+ DIGs the police have today when the Police could be managed with Dozen DIGs. Police is top heavy.
If the Administrators reduced the top and saved the money that went to maintain them & directed that money for the Welfare of the Rank & File, the COP on the Street will do a better job.

Wimalasena Yapa, Rufus randeniya….. You all lead a life while the police slugged it out sans overtime & Industrial action during time of natural disasters, wars , insurrections or when you are in distress.
THIS SLEEPING COP IS THE CRIME BUSTER, THE MID WIFE, SAVIOUR IN YOUR DISTRESS AND WHAT NOT…. You guys have just insulted them by courtesy on the Sunday leader…………….

  26. Pissed off

People dont be so selfish. Sri Lankan Sinhalese are the most selfish nation in the world. No so lately we ended the war against LTTE. Now you are talking selfishly about your tax money and other things. Have you ever thought how you survived from suicide bombers?

Remember that there was a war we ended sacrificing a lots of young three forces soldiers and policemen. People dont appreciate what Policemen do in Sri Lanka. Maybe you can see them very often and interfere with civil matters. People dont care. I know there are corrupted policemen. But you cant forget the services they have been giving to us. Do you know that the risk of getting a lung cancer is high in Policemen because they are staying outside handling traffic and inhale all the poisonous gas?

Do you know they cant go home if they are detailed to continue the duty? They have families, they are fathers…sons and husbands. They always get the bad names because of some corrupted officers and also they are the people who involve with civil matters.

Some people just look at the photo and already judged the security forces. You criticized because they have given their life, time and happiness for you to walk and enjoy your lives securely.

We all are humans. When we are tired, we are tired…That is why we work 8 hrs per day. You go to work and leave work after 8 hrs. But these people work hard and sometimes continue their work. Like you, they cant go home after 8 hrs of work. People before you criticize them listen to your heart, if he was your father, brother, husband….how do you feel about that? What if he was you and you are tired? How does it feel like?

Dont think only me, me, me, me, me, me, me… You owe your life to them. We remember how King Dutugemunu and his army fought against Elara.. Like that, we had fought a big war and lost a lots of lives. If they have not joined the armed forces, they would still be with us and enjoy this life. But they have given their lives.

You greedy selfish people, remember when you are in an A/C room, he worked all day long at the checkpoint. And he may had to continue his work. So tired, thirsty, hot…..You can even go to a shade when it was so hot. But he have to work there. Otherwise he would be in trouble. Maybe this was the only time after a long time he got a relief from another policeman. Maybe he got a chance to chill out for a minute.

This picture tell everything how hard their lives. Nothing else. You cant judge people by looking at them. I am sure the person who took this picture has a personal grudge against police. And also photographer does not care about the people who fought against terrorists and how they sacrificed their lives. It was not a long time ago.

People, what is wrong with you?

    • kudu

what is wrong with you mate
      with your elara ,dutugemunu balooney
looks like you were there at the checkpoint all day with him
what if he was a pilot and was tired likie your father ,brother, husband

      he he he

    • Unnecessary sympathy is not good. When it comes to law, sympathy has no place in justice. See his violation plain in the picture. Those who cry for his job and call innocent poor guy, expect those sweet words whispered to the ear when he grabs you by the collar at a violation.

    • Ma-Rout-Ti

      Well said !

    • T.W. Nathan

I love your English. Why not join most politicians & say that this photo is a fake & is doctored to discredit the police. & the Sri Lankan armed forces?
Why not ask Sunday Leader whether they got this photo from Channel4?
The Media should be there to publish & expose anything within certain permissible limits or else we will all become sycophants of the state !
      Wake up friend!

  27. vintage voter

    COP SNOOZING IS NOT NEWS!!!
    ITS HISTORY.

  28. I Hussein

I dont agree with posting of this pic at all. This poor guy might lose his job. Who knows what he is suffering from, maybe emotional maybe physical, maybe long hours of work etc etc. Its certainly not right to doze off when at duty. But end of the day he is a normal human being. SL Police is corrupt and mis managed for sure. That doesnt mean every officer is a rogue or lethargic. Come on SD this guy looks innocent to me.

  29. rohana

This shows the dogs are in the police force and wanted to have more salaries and perks. They should work honestly foremost wanted to country not welfare they get.

  30. Monkey Boon

Poor innocent cop, I believe he doesn’t know where he is on duty too and how long these guys are on duty after having Busa and tea only

SAD TO SAY THIS AS THERE ARE GOOD COPS ALSO IN SL POLICE SERVICE

  31. balu

another 3rd grade tatctic by this gossip tabloid. poor guy may loose his job

  32. seeku

He follows the footsteps of ex-IGP. I have seen him sleeping in important meetigs

  33. Execellent leadership training”whole country is at sleep”hope sinibole and kakkiriwalle is taking Sri Lanka to becoming the “Pride Of Asia”

  34. Aru

A napping cop with a loaded gun is better than one who is wide awake, when reminisces on those recent happenings. But, there is no excuse for sleeping whilst on duty. Salaries are not paid for a good snooze. It is high time Sri Lankans disciplined themselves and not condoned such activities. Suppose this man was to guard a VIP or a vital installation and something untoward happened then would those who are whitewashing him now speak up in his defence. As for Sri Lankans all fault is no fault at all. I am sure the kharkied ones know better that crime begets punishment. Well done photographer we need more people like you.

  35. Wendy

The poor guy must be over worked. this is what happens when they are not taken care of.

  36. Armed serviceman has no excuse for sleeping on duty. We appreciate the newspaper and its fearless service to the nation. You are doing what many others hesitate to do. Showing inappropriateness is a duty of journalism. Let the big and small know that the country depends on duty minded. This is a good example where a journalist prevailed over a policeman. Do you think that the policeman (when awake) would have let the journalist go free after doing something wrong?

  37. Reader

please don not publish such things.
do you think what may happen to his job after this photo.
do not do such ugly works.

WHO IS GOING TO FEED HIS FAMILY?

  38. skye

Regardless of what’s right/wrong, as a responsible news agency, you should at least attempt to protect this man’s identity. Shame on you.

  39. patriot

was this taken at the F.T.Z.? May be he is a gentleman trying to avoid Shooting Orders

  40. patriot

was this taken at the F.T.Z.? May be he is a gentleman, trying to evade shooting Orders

  41. TomsamUSa

Rest in peace;hope the barrel is pointing in the rght direction .

  42. Punchi Singho

He must have completed many hours of guard duty and this can be his rest time. Under the Fire Arms Law applicable to these poor Police oficers he is responsible for the Fire arm, and even in his rest he must keep the fire arm with him. Sunday Leader should have checked why he is having a short nap before publishing this photo.
If IGP Balasuriya can sleep in the Supreme Court why can’t this poor man after a long shift take a small nap?

  43. T.W. Nathan

Haven’t you all seen World Leaders such as the Russian President Boris Yeltsin sleeping & even drunk on stage? How about the late Pope John Paul or for that matter Ronald Reagan or even George Bush of WMD fame? Did any of them lose their jobs or their self respect? No! We all had a hearty laugh at their expense & carried on. Of course this policeman should get a slap on his wrist & that is all.
Why should he be sacked……unless he was drunk ?!!! I think some of you are wasting your time on trivial issues as it appears you have nothing better to do!

  44. KD

This is cheap and poor journalism. Why dosent this gallant pohotographer and reporter at least in the future publish the so called bigwigs who sleep at all state functions and even in the UN. These are cowards who prey on the weak and poor thats the reality.

  45. malka

Comment about comments : viewers are far far far ahead than ‘sunday leader’

  46. Manju

Come on Sunday Leader, shame shame shame on you. This is not news.
Many of us love to hate the police force at some time or the other in our lives
BUT put your bird brains in his job and position. He has to be on duty for long hours in the hot weather amidst being exposed to all the dust and noise. We are all human and this poor fellow may have been tired or feeling sick and needed a little rest. Now because of your stupidity he may surely face disciplinary action and even lose his job. Hope you people can live with that.
I sincerely hope the Police Department to have a close look at the picture and sees what a conscientious policeman he is by the way he is protectively holding his rifle and safeguarding it. SLdr please do not report this kind of thing in the future – we Sri Lankans live in a very stressful country and do not need this kind of bad journalism. I also hope you will make amends for what you have done.

  47. Selladurai

Sadly, Sunday Leader, you have invaded this man’s privacy and violated his human rights. I very much doubt you obtained his consent before publishing the picture. Or, did you ask him for his side of the story? He has grounds to litigate.

  48. malka

Lets create a ‘mass execution’ drama and video tape it. Sure our ‘leader’ will pay million for the video.

  49. SMD

Talk about terrible journalism. what university did you get your journalism degree from? you went to university to learn how to publish a photograph of a man holding what looks like a gun in brown clothes. then label is “a policeman snoozes at a checkpoint with a loaded gun in his lap”

This doesn’t even look like a checkpoint get your facts straight morons.

  50. SANJEEWA

First of all I must say I am a police officer. I read many comments posted for above snap. What I have to say as a police officer this huge offence in terms of code of conduct. But I am not very sure whether this cope is on duty or resting while others were on duty. But I am very happy most of other people from various races have commented humanly as Sri Lankan. I love the way they did it.
Police men are not from the Mars or any other planet. They are also the people came from the main society. Many elite people of the society think policemen are like dogs or beast to be manipulated by bait. But none thinks they are the highlighted indication of reflection where the main society is directed. I believe every thing what we are doing involved in the moral values and accountabilities in our society. If our society devoid of these aspects we can feel the cruelty and selfishness of the society. Hence, we should realize what police men show is the measurement how our aggregate society behaves. It is not suitable to blame the police all the way harshly. Policemen are also the people like others in this country.
First of all please let me tell what would happen to the above cope. Paper cutting of this picture would quickly reach the respective division and call for the identify parade and the cops will definitely be interdicted. On the other hand supervisors will be served with charge sheets. Just think for a while if he is bread winner of family what will happen. ……………I think this snap was taken by the photographer from high rising building to ridicule the police force. I am not talking about the government but police force.
Just look in the pay sheet and find the truth behind it. The total police force is underpaid but who talked about even higher officers did not asked about other than their duty. The have long our duties than 16 hours .No matter what they are getting the duty must be done .that is the government need
This is the curse of what is happening now. There is no voice to tell how police men are suffering financially and socially. Everyone sees only their evil side this is the way of Sri Lankan. That is why even if as Sri Lankans we had every resources we are economically and morally stagnating.
As an example if two men joined police force and other armed force as officers imagine what will happen after 10 years. Definitely the result will be that the police officer will be a sub Inspector as he recruited and other man definitely will be a major or similar rank. On the other hand police man will earn a net pay Rs 12000 or 13000 per month and armed force officer will have approximately Rs 50000 or more. I selected armed for because no other comparison to other than armed force. Even if it is said police department this not real department this is semi military institution like all over the world. In some countries they don’t have army other than police force.
Not only this type of egoistic and pigheaded journalists but the head of state and the ministers whip the whole police force without looking in to the actual fact.
This is the closest outcome by not being workers union in police force.

    • Aru

All this is no excuse for snoozing whilst on duty. If it is an offence in terms of the code of conduct he has to face the consequences. Don’t whitewash the offender and blame the photographer.
