ICEU And UNP Complain To HRC

The Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU) and the UNP today handed petitions to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) on the clash between the police and employees of the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ).

A clash between the police and FTZ workers protesting against the private sector pension bill resulted in the death of one worker.

ICEU head, Wasantha Samarasinghe handed 22 petitions to the HRC over the FTZ clash.

Samarasinghe said that the 22 petitions were handed over to the HRC on the violation of the rights of the workers’ at the FTZ.

He said the petitions called for the HRC to inquire and take appropriate action to safeguard the human rights of the workers.

He added that the ICEU would also file a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court against the violation the FTZ workers’ rights during the clash on May 30.

Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, National Organizer Ravi Karunanayake and parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena handed a petition saying that most of the FTZ workers affected by the police attack are afraid to come forward and seek compensation due to threats on their lives.

Therefore, Karunanayake said that the party decided to request the HRC to intervene and provide justice to the FTZ workers.
