Houses Bulldozed In Wellawatte To Widen Road

Houses and shops along Pamankada Road, Wellawatte were torn down in an attempt to widen the road. The occupants said they were given only a day’s notice before their houses were broken down. According to residents, even though they were paid Rs.125,000 per perch, they weren’t given enough time to move, or find a temporary residence, nor did the Government make any attempt to relocate them. Many school children in the area, particularly those studying for their Advanced Level examinations have been inconvenienced. Residents also complained that the compensation received was not adequate to rebuild their houses. Many claimed to have house deeds dating back to over 60 years.

Pamankada Road links Maya Ave to Pamankada junction
The road referred here is called Havelock Road and not Pamankada.
Except for the stretch from Pamakanda junction to the Pamankada bridge (which is narrow ) the roads on either side are broad for two lane traffic in either direction.
Massive road blocks occurred on this stretch of road for nearly a quarter of a century as it could not be widened.
It was made a one way road from Pamankada bridge as a temporary solution.
Once this stretch is widened, traffic to Kohuwella and beyond from Pamankada junction will help thousands of commuters to travel easily to and from Colombo

It is the time the RDA make arrangements to find alternative strategies to tackle the traffic congection in the city of Colombo. Sky train Line from Kaluthara to Colombo is a viable and feasible solution.

Every building – shanty, house, shop, or other that is less than 100 feet from the center of a main road, on either side of a road, must be demolished with absolutely no compensation.

The monkeys who encroached to the roads creating traffic congestions must be sent to Bintenna. JP/Sri Lanka

if they have the deeds, then this is really wrong. its ok to bulldoze houses with no deeds. the people with deeds should file a case against gov.

Welll, “what goes around comes around” my heart goes out to these poor folks. I guess the government does not care about their plight. I thought they lived in a Buddhist country what happend ??? is this a part of Buddhisim? that you kick poor folks out of their homes wow! I sure don’t want any part of that. Mr Rajapaksa where are you? of course you are in your palace with your queen. It will be your turn one day to live on the streets or to come crawling out of a hole remember Haddam??

Only in Sri Lanka!!! The right way to do is to give notice well in advance so that they can find alternate accommodation, appoint Government officials to help them with their move and to make is as smooth as possible. This plan was done over 35 years ago I believe with a roundabout at Pamankade junction. Since most of the countries have given up on roundabouts I’m sure there will be traffic lights at the intersection of Pamankade Rd and Havelock Rd
What I can’t understand is that why couldn’t the Government inform the occupants of these homes well in advance? Only in Sri Lanka!!!

hmmm…another unbalaced article. I have lived in this area for many years. It was always known that the road will be widened – no surprise. Sorry for the kids who were inconvenienced, but the people living around here always knew this day would come.

People who voted need be suffer, still our fools never understand the political drama of this country.

Even they give notice they will not move. However the road s to be improved and unauthorised occupation of public on road side pavement to be avoided
