Mervyn Bans Slaughter Houses

Minister Mervyn Silva walks past a goat after he put a stop to the slaughter of over 100 animals at a Hindu Temple in Chilaw last week.
Minister Mervyn Silva says he has decided to ban slaughter houses in the Gamapaha district with effect from tomorrow (Monday). The Minister, who had last week prevented the slaughter of animals at a Hindu Temple in Chilaw, has said that he will take stern action against anyone operating slaughter houses in Gampaha following the ban. He also said that he will take measures to seek support to have the ban implemented in the entire western province soon. Slaughtering of goats and scores of fowl is an annual ritual at the Munneswaram Kali Amman Hindu Temple in Chilaw. Animal rights groups and Buddhist monks decry the ritual claiming it was an act of cruelty against animals. However Hindu priests had last week broken coconuts and cursed Minister Silva for preventing the tradition ritual from taking place.

There is a little logic and good element of his action. The problem is that this is similar to soora saradiel action. There is a law in the country, as a minister he is in a strong position to seek help from law imposers to implement is contentions. Instead, he is trying to show of like a hero. That is the mentality of an uneducated man. He can not understand that is action brings the government to disrepute. At least, President must sumon him and advise him to grow up a bit, before he will do something that would damage the entire country. This is nothing less than a mockery.
He should impose an all-island ban, not necessarily in the Gampaha district!!

Hindu religion is against cruelty and killing of animals and human beings.
If any temples (could be extreamly few ) who still follow this un-holy practice are doing a great dis-service to the religion.
But this suddenly emerged hypocritical pretenders to uphold moral and spritual value as Mervyn Silva and some Buddhist monks should be decried.
They were jubliant and happy when mass of ( many thousands ) tamil women, children and babies were murdred and raped by Singhala armed forces. Also they blessed the murderers in the Buddhist temples. I was one of the victim of 1958 riots and among the Singhala attackers were some Buddhist monks.
There are many thousands vegitarians (non meat eaters) among the Hindus.
But there are abundant meat eaters of Singhala Buddhist including Monks.
Clean your house first before preaching to others.
Interesting! But is he not usurping the authority and not have the legislaure or the relevant authirity to impose such orders drastic tactics?.
I whole hearted agree that the “sacrifice” of animals to the gods is deplorable, As the right that people have to eat meat should be left to individuals.
Incidentally what came of the many animals that were seized by the learned Dr. carted to the police station. Most likely they ended up in the slaughter house and someone sure made a good killing of the proceeds.
Pity that they could not sacrifice mervyn ..I am sure that would solve many problems of the people and the country..In fact reduce the burden of the country too..

Meat products are consumed by Humans all over the world. In Sri Lanka Government / Municipality licensed slaughter houses exist all over the country. Whilst it is not good to slaughter animals for Religious ritual purposes why is the Hon Minister out on a war path to create more problems to the small scale produces who of rare animals and sell them for slaughter to make a living. Depriving of their livelyhood will swell the profits of big Businesses who import meat products from abroad. I hope sanity will prevail and Mr Minister will not infringe on the Human liberties given in our constitution by taking the law into his own hands trying to ban slaughtering of animals for consumption in the entire country. Sri Lanka is a muti religiossociety and consumption of meat products by humans are allowed in other Religions. Please Mr Minister do not create more problems among the multi religios society in Sri Lanka.
Congratulations Minister! We need men of courage like you to stop this barbaric practice of slaughtering animals in order to pay for human beings sins committed. This has nothing to do about religion or race, but simply a barbaric practice being put to a full stop. We (Bhuddist-Muslims-Hindus) have co-existed for thousands of years peacefully tolerating each other.
But if you try to intervene in our religious affairs you are inviting trouble.
Dalada Maligawa drums are made of skins of dead animals for thousands of years, not a single animal was killed to take the skin to make drums. If any body kills animals in the name of any religion he belongs to Stone-Age era. There is absolutely no place for animal killing either in Buddism or Hindunism. Sri Lankan muslims doing this animal sacrifice are privilaged because both Buddists & Hindus tolarate them.
Dont forget when muslims in their thousandfs were hacked to death by Protugese some 300 years ago, they were rescud by King of Kandy & given land in Eastern Province which came under Kandyan Kingdom, & they live up untill to date.

Slaughter of cattle is already banned in Sri Lanka,enactment was passed a few years ago, any doubts; check that with Attorny General. So called free media did not give it any publicity , nor Government for that mater. ( like Astra magarine case ) Only thing is that it is not implemented. Minister Mervin the Great can get court order againt all the slaughter houses.

I totaly agree with Dr.A.Hassan’s & Lankaputra’s comments on this very delicate matter & would like to add ” One who saves one life, saves the whole world”. Animals too are living beings who has the fundamental right to live on just like you and me.

I remember when i lived in Sri lanka – we used to sacrifice animals during Eid ul Adha – we used to do it at our aunts place out of respect for the 2 buddhist temples in my street.
People who slaughter animals should use common sense, and be sensitive to our brothers (whether buddhist or tamil) beliefs.
But I also think that you need to leave what they eat upto the people

At every time we must see whether the work done is right or wrong irrespective of the person who has done the thing. Take care of innocent animals is a great thing. If anyone dislikes rescuing them in any form is the cruelness towards the helpless animals. We all Sri Lankans, let’s against the cruelness and be with kind and peaceful minds. May every heart feels the grievance of the guiltless animals!!

Let the laws of the country be made effective by the law enforcement agencies like Police and Courts. Don’t give it to the hands of politicians. Is Mervyn spending his energiesto eradicate ‘KUDU’ trade.
Whether we Buddhists like it or not eating fish and meat has become an essential source of protien. DEFINITELY NOT DRUGS AS HEROIN.

Why has Minister Silva spared Muslim or Halal slaughter houses? Yes, animals should not be killed in the name of God but what about killing humans in the north and east by the army? Will he also stop them?
I too deplore these animal sacrifices but decisions of these nature is best left to parliament according to our constitution. If the likes of Mervyn Silva is allowed to abritrarily decide, we are climbing onto a slippery slope we would have difficulty climbing out of. Everybody in parliament knows what he is doing is uncostitutional but nobody appears to censure him for fear of being assaulted by his thugs as had been done many times in the past.

Animal sacrifice is an ancient ritual. It was practiced by the Jews and others before Christ. I would like to know if the flesh of the animals used for sacrifice by Hindus are consumed later? If so there is no waste.
The Muslims do not sacrifice animals, they practice halal. But this is also a barbaric method of killing an animal. Should Mervin try to stop this practice he’ll be taking on more than he could chew. As for the eating of beef, people should have the right to eat what they want. Devout Buddhists and Hindus refrain from eating beef but Hindus eat goat flesh. As one of yours writers mentioned, Sri Lanka is not an entirely Buddhist country and people shold be permitted to eat what they want. What does the bogus doctor want foreign tourists to eat – grass? Mervin is behaving like a Hitler and what is our President doing? Why is he letting him run around like a mad dog.
