The fire brigade has been placed on standby at the Norochcholai coal power plant as a result of frequent fires breaking out on the premises.
An official at the Fire Brigade in Colombo said that 10 fire fighters have been sent to Norochcholai to fight any fires which may break out.He said that most fires occur in the coal storage facility of the plant and the Puttalam fire department is not equipped to handle such fires.
An official at the Norochcholai coal power plant confirmed that there have been frequent fires at the plant and as a result the fire brigade has been placed on alert.
However, he said the main reason behind the plant not operating at full capacity was due to the shortage of coal.
The official also said that the plant was closed for maintenance for 10 days and will be back in operation from today (Sunday).
