Orphanage Matron Arrested

The matron of Prem Nivasa, a children’s home in Moratuwa which is embroiled in a controversy over the alleged sale of children was arrested Friday night (Nov 25) by a team of police officials. The matron, a missionary of Indian origin was produced before a Magistrate and was later remanded.
Police on Friday night also took an under-aged pregnant girl and two other females from the home and placed them in the custody of another home in the area.
“The matron of this home has been remanded till December 1. Steps are also being taken to impound her passport,” said the Police Media Spokesperson Ajith Rohana when contacted by The Sunday Leader yesterday.
“We could not accept the way this home was being run. There was no proper procedure..,” said Anoma Dissanayake, Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority. It is learnt that when NCPA police raided this children’s home on Wednesday they found several pregnant, under-aged women and 12 infants in the home. They also found people who had ‘paid’ and were ‘ready to pay’ waiting to get children
The case against Prem Nivasa working on the theme – missionaries of charity - heightened when it was found to be linked to an adoption agency which advertised children from Ukraine, Liberia, Uganda and Sri Lanka. The going rate for a child, it was discovered through payment receipts, is U.S. Dollars 10,000.
When the Sunday Leader contacted Prem Nivasa Saturday morning for their side of the story, a member of the staff who answered the phone said that they were getting ready for a religious gathering and were unable to comment.

This is absolutely RUBBISH. The Missionaries of Charity is a Religious Order founded by Blessed Mother Teresa. It is sthe work of some interested party to discredit the Catholic Church.
I totally agree. This is one of the most respected homes in the country run by some of the most respected order who have been operating in SL for years. They work with the child protection authority on a daily basis to get children adopted. Judges and lawyers alike know of them for being a straight and honest institution.
This is no two words the work of someone with a personal vendetta towards the institution or towards christianity in general.
We should not tolerate this type of bulling. I hope the authorities will see through this rather than turn the other cheek which seems the general order of the day.
Please do not bring Religion in to this bogus activity. We know how people sell the religion for their benefit. It happens in India and even in the US. Having pregnant women in several periods of pregnancy, big money rolling through the system is very interesting note. This has no effect on religions and please do not be a shit disturber.
Discredit Catholic Church??Is the sex scandal against young boys in the catholic church all around the world not enough to discredit them?? Pal,don’t be too upset. Catholic or otherwise, there are vicious minds around us. This place (Prem Nivasa) has been a subject of discussion along this scandal for a while now.There was evidence to suggest they had 70 odd babies but they have records only for 40 something. That itself is enough to shut the place down.
Hi Ruwan…. looks like you know something more than the paper reporter, the NCPA and the police… how long have you been following the ‘discussion along this scandal’… or were you the one who ‘created’ the scandal???
The fact that we have ‘vicious minds around us’… I felt it is quite true when I read your comments… and also the paper articles… the number of children you are comparing are like comparing apple and oranges. The kids handed over by courts to Prem Nivasa and the kids residing at the home are not apple compared against apples…Just remember that ‘Prem Nivasa’ is not run by the courts to ‘park’ the kids they do not know what to do with…. Now, don’t you think that the courts also need to be prosecuted for sending children to ‘Prem Nivasa’, if the ‘Prem Nivasa’ is such a bad place and there were ‘discussion along this scandal’ or were you having the discussions not known to the courts??
Just sit quiet thinking about this before you start adding your two cents worth next time…

I have known these people for a Long time and what they are doing is to look after the poor and the under privileged. Anyone can criticize and take actions just to show their authority however what these nuns are doing is a Godly duty without expecting any favors or financial benefit. Truth will come out and people who made the lies will rot in he’ll including NCPA.

Just because you donot know the meaning of charity, do not offer your ass and prove that you are an ass though the name happens to be ‘Sira’. This seems to be a conspiracy. No children are given for foreign adoptions except through court. There is a comprehensive law passed in late 1980s. the Child Protection Authority should prove the case in Court or be answerable for humiliating a religious nun.
Hope the court has the power to do so on its own…. I am sure the nuns will consider it a waste of money to file a case for the unjust humiliation…. they will rather feed the kids with that money.
Hope there is a brave impartial Buddhist lawyer who will do this pro bono to prove that we are not a discreminative nation and that we understand what real justice is.

How can Anoma arrest the nuns for not updating the register and call it a scandal. Then the MET department officials should be arrested before that, for not issuing warnings in time, that lead to death of poor fishermen. I do not want to predict that this is anything to do with being anti-catholic, but definitely Anoma is misusing her power. But …. Anoma – God still loves you. Though the God does not like the sin, he loves the sinner. Therefore repent now and vomit the truth, as to who’s agenda you commit this crime, instead of arresting a nun who is in God’s service.
Others directly accuse Anoma Dissanayake, director of the National Child Protection Auctority (NCPA), of being behind the premeditated media and legal attack on the Missionaries of the hostel, to promote Buddhist orphanages.
According to Saman Kulatissa , a social activist in the north of the country, the media attack is “a way to hurt Christians.” Indeed, he recalls, “the president of the NCPA asked her staff not to disturb an orphanage run by Buddhist monks, in the Vaviniya”. The structure, the activist says, “is the home of Tamil children, forced to shave their heads and practice Buddhism, without being able to see their families.” some of these children have gone missing and Anoma is covering up the deeds of this culprit.
Anura Ranatunga, a Buddhist from Colombo, defends the work of the Missionaries, “I know a lot of Buddhist girls, mothers and daughters, they have received the best care and attention from these sisters. We must all thank the nuns for what they have done in recent years. ”
