The world today is facing a radically new and unprecedented situation which demands political wisdom and a responsible approach towards work, an envoy said:
Thomas F. Daetwyler, Latvia’s Honorary Consul General in Sri Lanka speaking at a function held recently in Colombo to fete Latvia’s National Day further said: “We are living in an age of confusion in the global economy and there are increasing convincing signs of a new wave of the crisis. We must learn from past mistakes so that the crisis does not reoccur.”
“The relationship and trade between Sri Lanka and our country has significantly developed over the last years and we are further aiming to strengthen the ties between our two countries,” he said.
The envoy also said that it was on November 18, 1918 that the newly independent state of Latvia, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea in the very heart of Europe was born. The country marks 93 years of independence, which was interrupted from 1940 for 50 years during occupation.
“By acceding to international declarations such as the Millennium Development Goals’ Declaration and the Cairo Declaration, Latvia has demonstrated its readiness to become actively involved in the resolution of global problems, eliminating poverty, strengthening democracy, limiting disease spread, ensuring sustainable environmental development and promoting gender equality and the universal availability of education, “ said Daetwyler.
Among those present at the occasion was National Languages & Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara. Daetwyler also proposed a toast for President Mahinda Rajapakse at the event.
