Gazprom officials to discuss with Cairns

Russia’s Gazprom officials who are currently in Sri Lanka are to hold a discussion with India’s Cairns Company with regard to drilling oil and natural gas in the Mannar Basin.

Cairns announced the finding of two natural gas deposits in the Mannar Basin while exploring for oil.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha said the Gazprom officials are currently carrying out assessment work with regard to the possibility of exploring natural gas in the Mannar Basin.

“The officials will meet with representatives from Cairns to discuss their findings,” he said.

A final decision would be made after the Gazprom officials conduct a thorough assessment on the data, the Minister added.

However, Premajayantha said Gazprom has not yet been allocated a block in the Mannar Basin.
