FLASH: Ministry says stray dogs will not be killed

The Health Ministry says with the number of dog bite incidents seeing a rise in recent times a more effective mechanism is being worked on to control the stray dog population while continuing with the “no kill” policy.

Health Ministry spokesman W. M. D. Wanninayake told The Sunday Leader that there was no move to kill stray dogs and said that such claims were based on a statement made by Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena in Kalutara last week which was taken out of context.

Sirisena had said that the government needs to control the stray dog population following complaints of stray dogs entering government hospitals.

The minister had said that the authorities are being pushed towards revoking a “no kill” policy on stray dogs but insisted that the policy will continue.

Several petitions appeared over social media websites and was also being distributed via email and mobile phones seeking support to stop moves to kill stray dogs.

Wanninayake said that the existing method of injecting female stray dogs to prevent it from giving birth was not effective and so a new mechanism has to be introduced.

However he insisted that stray dogs will not be killed to control its population growth.

Get the example from other countries, how they control stary animals with out disturbing people activities, First of all a good lesson should be given for the people who dessire to keep animals as pets. Becouse, there is a assumption that huaman has a advance mind than animals. Advanced mind people know how to keep animals as pets as well as they know how to control unnessesery animal s 9dogs) without disturbing society.

So NO Policy as usual? lol
Make up your mind without playing natak.
Stray animals must be culled or eliminated for various good reasons or hand them over to anmal lovers or Animal right movements who can look after them.

Honestly the government needs to realise we aren’t foolish and willing to sit by whilst they piss away all sensibility. Well done Sunday Leader and well done all petitioners.
Ministers, please learn whatever language you have to speak in public. Us, the public are sick of your mismanagement and inconsiderate behaviour.
Seek public census if you wish to remain in power, at least until your own infighting kills your party.
My full name is here, go ahead, come get me!

Thanks to everyone who signed the petition aganst this horrendous crime against animals. to slaughter any animal is a crime. This is man,s best friend who guards the man against every possible disaster. But the kindness sometimes it gets from unkind owners is being dumped when pregent or sick. This is very sad.

Did the dog save people during TSUNAMI, WAR, DEVASTATION…..????? When the political order decides to eliminate anyone opposing its governance no DOG can save that person/s from its ire. Man takes the role of a street dog when the politician sees a threat to his hegemony. SAVE THE DOG – KILL THE MAN.

stray dogs is a problem allright, but one need not kill them.these government officers havent still found a proper mechanism to solve this problem, allthough the problem exist for a long time.a effective mechanism should be found to do away with idiotic politicians, idiotic government servants and all idiotic helpers of these idiotic corrupted criminell politicians, because they harm us more than the stray dogs.stray dogs cannot be blamed, but thes polticians who are worse than the stray dogs should be blamed.let us find a mechanism to get rid of these a.h. for ever.

  9. Nirmala

Finally a good idea comes from the government and they abandon it due to pressure. Our country is in a pathetic state indeed. The Colombo 7 “nona”s who shouted against this are not the ones suffering from the stray dog problem. It is us, the working class that have to endure the hardship of getting bitten by stray dogs. And stepping on dog feces on every other step when we walk down a street. (Yes. We walk. We do not have luxury vehicles like you lot)

  10. Confused

If the killing of hundreds of cattle every day , is condoned by the society,, should not the killing of stray dogs who are liable to spread rabies be also condoned ?

  11. Senura

there had been a few eye witnesses in moratuwa area whom have seen some people snatching dogs in gunny bags.. Sunday Leader please look into it

This is not the first time this minister has backtracked on his hairbrain ideas. Once he wanted to ban marraige between Thalasemic carrier couples, then wanted to charge patints under the influence of alcohol who seek treatment in Govt hospitals.
This is the result when a person has been elevated to a position where he does not have any qualification to hold, except an ego that he is gods gift to man kind.

  13. Shehani

    Dear Nirmala,

In reply to your previous post, I am actually astonished that people like you believe inhumane practices such as the mass murder of dogs will actually solve the problem. While the rest of the world has developed are you implying that the nation of Sri Lanka should in fact regress back to the barbaric times of killing anything and everything that ‘you” might consider problematic? Are you even aware of the pain these dogs undergo when they are injected with this poison?

We live in a Buddhist country and the doctrine teaches Buddhists to avoid any work connected with the killings of animals and also teaches that wrong behavior will have to paid for in a future life.

So without being so ready to support the mass murder of dogs, you might want to ponder the fact in accordance with the Buddhist teachings you probably will understand the plight of the stray dogs better in your next birth when you’re born one.

I do not consider myself a “Colombo 7 nona” or anything even close to that, however I have owned dogs and experienced the love that they are so ready to share, thus I could not let your post pass by without a reply. It is not about luxury cars or fancy houses, the core of the matter is whether you have a heart or not.

While you might not consider this a positive move, I think it is encouraging to see the government care about what the public thinks!

iam against killing the stray dogs.iam against cruelty to animals, but iam not a buddhist.in the western developed countries dogs are loved but these people are not buddhists.the problem with the s.l.an buddhists is that they do not know the preaching of lord buddha, because they go to the tempels and listen to the bana of the buddhist priests.majority of these buddhists priests do not live according to the preachings of lord buddha.

  14. janine

    Nirmala,

In which day and age have you been bitten by a stray dog while walking on the streets of Colombo? If at all one of these dogs did bite you, it is because you probably did something to the dog, but i doubt the dog would even consider going down to your level. Dogs are loving and caring animal. All they wish for, is for us to give them love and kindness and in return they will give you loyalty and love in ways no human can provide.

So every other step you take you trample dog feces? Which person in their right mind would believe such a statement in the first place? Are you saying the streets of Colombo are full of feces? How ignorant must you be. I totally agree with Shehani, it a matter of having a heart, which obviously you don’t.

Do you think you can just get rid of a problem like this in such an inhumane manner? Where is your conscience?

    • RDF

      Janine
I do agree with you. A stary usually will not bite unles rabid. It is a house hold pets. let loose that may occationally bite. Most dog bites are due to pet dogs that are not cared for, by their owners. And the victims are mostly a family member.
As for Nirmala you seem to be having a grudge against the affluent society, if so please do not take it on innocent stray dogs. Walking in Colombo you are more liable to be knocked down my a ministers speeding motorcrade than slipping on dog poo.

Leave your partner at home. Disappear for 5 days. Come back home. Dog will greet you, partner will eat you.

  16. Mudalige

Great. Why not show the same sympathy towards humans who are abducted and killed extrajudicially. Why not stand up against the ‘white van’ used in the abductions?

    • S.A.

Well said. Timely stuff to the dog minded two legged ones. Even George Bush was shown with the White House dog caring and showing the world about the love for the animals AT THE SAME TIME ORDERING BOMBING in Afghanistan and Iraq killing human beings (Inlc. Women & children). When the war was at at its peak here in SL only few spoke about deaths of human beings. All animal lovers backed the war.

Even ADOLPH HITLER was strict vegetarian and a thick animal lover. But, he ended up killing nearly 120 million people. When he committed suicide his dog also was dead before his death. Most VEGETARIANS & ROMANTIC ANIMAL LOVERS by virtue are RACISTS, SICK and ATHEISTIC. Its automatic for them be RACISTS, SICK & ATHIESTIC. That’s the natural result of being ROMANTIC ABOUT THE ANIMALS without sound logical reasons. Being an Animal lover is not a sin but being a ROMANTIC ANIMAL LOVER is a danger to the society.

Check the history of most famous/infamous animal lovers – they hate human beings for RACIAL REASONS. Even in our country we had a lot past leaders who hated minorities and did everything to destroy the fewer rights remained with them, were all animal lovers (or maybe pretended to be).

“Dharmishta samajayak” concept of JR ended up producing a criminal bourgeoisie which is playing havoc and pillaging wealth at the cost of the whole country today.

stray dogs are verry usefull to speadout the garbitch all over srilanka and the gouverment can save bullits , to use against the tourists

In the late eighties, I was woken up in the mornings almost weekly by the yowling of puppies and mewling of kittens which people had brought stealthily and abandoned in the open garage space in the front portion of the rented house I was living in, on Aluthmawatha Road.
I used to collect them in a box, take them by car,and abandon them on a lonely spot far away. There was no other solution.

This was justified, as after all, millions of cattle, chickens & fish are deliberately killed for food.
Those whose hearts bleed at the thought of stray dogs being killed, should therefore beome vegetarians.

These people thus handed over the problem of the offspring of stray dogs and cats born on their premises to persons like me. But, their hearts bled at the thought of stray dogs being killed after collection by the vans of the Anti Rabies Campaign. Those days many people died annually by rabid dog bites. Even now these people prefer stray dogs to die of starvation,by being run over on roads or of rabies. I think that killing is preferable to letting them die
    thus, after long suffering.
My neighbour always bought ‘cracked eggs’ at the grocery store nearby – the chicken was already dead and hence she would not be guilty of murder!
We are a Nation of Hypocrites!

  19. de silva gamage

to this problem the solution is the government should set up a ministry and hand over the ministry to be managed by mervyn as he knows how to manage the dogs thugs bribes whynot try

  20. Son of a gun

Im against any cruelty to animals but there should be a professional approach to this problem leaving the religion and emotions behind .
Look at western countries how they control animal population even though they have the strictest laws for animal cruelty. All the emotions are due to the animal being the dog and how if it was stray monkeys or rats ? do we still say its a buddhist country or those animals are part of hindu culture so we cant eliminate ? We cant be like india where west make fun about the stary cows and slums but we can be clean and different like any other developed country when we get rid of this dogs issue
