Star cricketers, Kumar Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardena’s new restaurant ‘Ministry of Crab’ has been found to be illegal.
The Department of the Registrar of Companies said that ‘Ministry of Crab’ was initially registered as ‘The Crab Corporation’ but changed its name following the launch.
Following a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday, newspaper editors were notified of the illegal nature of the restaurant which is situated at the newly renovated Dutch Hospital.
President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga had said that the name of the establishment was illegal.
He explained that the restaurant had originally been registered under the name ‘The Crab Corporation’ before being changed to ‘Ministry of Crab’. Weeratunga’s comments came after Rajapaksa had made an offhand joke about yet another Ministry being created in Sri Lanka.
N. Hettiarachchi from the media division of the Department of the Registrar of Companies told The Sunday Leader that it is illegal to register a name of an organisation under one name and then change it.
He added that any name change can only be done after having notified the Department. Hettiarachchi added that the approval and rejection of any registration of company names was at the discretion of the Director. Asked what action if any would be taken against the restaurant, Hettiarachchi responded that he was unaware of any action being taken against the owners or the establishment. He added that under normal circumstances the Department would notify the organisation of their breach of rules and request that they revert to the registered name
