New video against the LTTE

The Defence Ministry released a new video on Wednesday which looks at the various crimes committed by the Tamil Tiger rebels during a brutal 30 year war.

The release of the video comes as Sri Lanka prepares to face pressure at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva later this month to probe allegations committed by the military during the war.

The Sri Lankan Media Center for National Security said that the video titled “Ruthless” recounts true accounts of survivors who once, had lived under the brutal and repressive regime of the Tamil Tigers but were now willing to speak freely on what they had experienced during the days of the war.

“It is well known to the world that many calculated efforts are being taken by various groups to whitewash the Tamil Tigers and its atrocities and accuse the government of Sri Lanka for allegedly committing war crimes instead.  The video was released amidst such allegations to show the world what really had happened during the time of war,” the Director of the Media Center for National Security Lakshman Hullugale said.

The video has been produced by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence and Urban Development headed by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Defence Ministry had last year released a video to counter the allegations raised against the Sri Lankan military in a series of documentaries by a British television Channel.

The documentaries by the British television had alleged that the Sri Lankan military had committed serious war crimes during the final battle against the rebels before the rebels were defeated in 2009.

A US War Crimes official is currently in Sri Lanka meeting with the government to discuss some of the allegations while two other top US government officials are also due in Sri Lanka next week.

Stephen J Rapp, Ambassador at Large for the Office of Global Criminal Justice of the US State Department met Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and discussed some of the concerns, the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

Ah! the TRUTH of all THRUTHS!. Now we only have to find a Channel IV to release it! Bravvo bravo… This time NO ZERO CASUALTIES that’s for sure.

  2. Rattapakse

Fine and that was why the world came up to eliminate them.

But will this enough to save us at Geneva where the state’s HR records are scrutinised?

  3. union

War crime and genocide committed by state can not be justified by the crime committed by LTTE. If we look at it in totality Sri Lankan state systamatically slaughtered almost 200,000 civilians over the period of 3 decades. Further LTTE members have already been punished for their crime. Now time to look at the criminals who are part of the government and military forces.

  4. Why it took almost 3 years to produce this video. I am not one minute supporting LTTE. They are terrorist out fit and they never respect humanity. But our government was worse than LTTE during the final stages of the war. I think the Defence Secretary prepared this video to show at UN Human Right Council. We don’t trust this regime under Rajapakse & Co.

    • Nobody can take a democratic government to human rights council. You can’t do that to US, UK or any other countries who committed crime in Iraq, Afgan and Pakistan. UN should not allow Sri Lanka to be taken to HR council either. First, get the diaspora Tamils to behave. If they have Sri Lankan passports they should behave like true Sri Lankans, not like LTTE. If they do not hold Sri Lankan passports, they should mind their own business.

both accusse each other in order to justify their crimes against humanity.

  6. tamil circle

You branded them has terrorist long time ago and many nations believed. But these very nations are pointing the fingers at you now, what is your answer? Others sins does not absolve your sins. Confess you sins. What is state terrorism? A puerile attempt!|

My question is this. Do you agree that LTTE committed crimes and they are terrorists? Problem is that each party accuse the other party for crimes committed by them and non of them never think or accept that they committed crimes. It is a shame that most of the people who are now accusing SL government for war crimes supported LTTE in many ways when they were killing thousands of innocent civilians by bombing public buses, trains, markets etc.

  7. Colambo Buwa

This stupid video will not make a difference. An inquiry into the Human Rights abuse will still go ahead, no matter how many lis this government try to tell us.

  8. It is learnt that whoever is speaking or giving information on this video called “Ruthless” is still from the area under the control of Sri Lankan Military and not independent version. What else can you expect from people under the control of the military when the military orders you to speak. This is forced version by the Military. Is it accepted? Who is trying to fool the World?

  9. love2beTRAITOR

yes LTTE committed human rights violation, y not allow international investigations to find out

  10. KING KONG

The government machinery has been too slow in exposing these atrocities until the LTTE put out some ‘dramatic’ box office videos through the Channel 4…..all these while our missions abroad were just warming their seats doing nothing. We won the war but lost the propaganda war miserably. This is a crying shame. Having all the facts on our side to lose this through recklessness is unexcusable and unpardonable.

Most videos released by pro LTTE organisations can be viewed from their web pages or from various journals. Defence Ministry must place these videos too in the internet for the public to view. These should also be released to Sri lankan foreign missions for them to organise workshops inviting people who matters in the foreign countries and screen them.

What ever said and done, we all sri lankans should rally around the Defense Secretary and help him to achieve his target in this human rights case, after all he too a member of the team who gave us the movement of freedom.

Just compare the tone of the comments here and the comments posted on the news article on Channel 4 video.
It is a shame that most of the people who are now accusing SL government for war crimes supported LTTE in many ways when they were killing thousands of innocent civilians by bombing public buses, trains, markets etc. They never criticize LTTE when they were committing those horrendous crimes. TNA and most of the Tamil politicians kept their mouth shut (Politicians who talked against LTTE were killed by them). Some kept sending money to LTTE and were cheered when LTTE bombed a public bus. They were ecstatic when LTTE was progressing.
What are the same group of people are saying now?

  14. Kumar

No one can forget the brutality of the LTTE terrorism who were under their control.
However, the government of Sri Lanka cannot preclude the atrocities by creating this kind of videos. This is due to the fact that the witness who testified in this video are under the effective control of the Sri Lankan military occupation. We should understand the reality of the situation in Sri Lanka. No one can express their own views against the Rajapaksa regime.

According to International law, one party’s violations of law not allow other party to violate the law.

We can assumed that the government of Sri Lanka accept its broutality that had been committed its forces with the direction of political leaders.

  15. Shiva

The world knows who is ruthless, who denies democratic values, who committed war crimes on the name of democracy – Rajapakse is the worst criminal leader of the 21st Century! The so called civilized world should not waste time in charging with crimes against humanity!

  16. Observator

Killing either Tamils or Sinhalese in Srilanka during past 32 years cannot be accepted by the civilize people living all over the world as an alternative “Action” and the final solution to “Ethenic Problems in Srilanka”. Fixing Laws and regulations to concider if any body born in Srilanka erespactable of the nationality of their parents or pedegree, or the language or religion as a “Srilankan” is the answer to this question. If not another 25 years or before not only Tamils but also Muslims will fight asking for a separate part for them in this “Pearl” of the indian ocean.

  17. raj

Why did Sri Lanka pulled out reporters and UN during the war if it was really concerned with LTTE crimes. If it has allowed them, they would have witnessed the accussed crimes. In reality, both commited crimes against humanity.

  18. Shiva

people have seen enough pro and anti videos of the Sri Lankan regime, the LTTE and the Tamils. Its time for an independent internationa war crimes and human rights organization to put an end to malicious propaganda by the Rajapakse regime, bring those responsible to the crimes against huamnity to accountability and delivery of justice to the victims.
