Shavendra removed from UN group

Sri Lanka’s deputy U.N. ambassador has been dropped from a group advising Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on payment to troops participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations, the Associated Press reported today.

According to the report, the group’s chair, former U.N. deputy secretary-general Louise Frechette, said in a statement Wednesday that after consulting other members she had advised Major General Shavendra Silva “that his participation is not appropriate or helpful.”

Silva was a top commander during the final stages of the country’s civil war.

Frechette gave no further explanation, but Silva headed Division 58, which was named in a U.N. report in connection with alleged war crimes.

A war hero has been humiliated, in the eyes of the nations of the world. Why apoint ex miitary men to diplomatic position soon after a war that killed thousands of innocents.. What will we say at the UNHCR sessions with egg on our faces. Poor diplomacy dear MR. President and Mr. Gotabaya.

This may be the beginning of either being booted out of nyc or stripping of diplomatic immunity and reopening the charges against him(it) for mass murders.

Great news. Just removing from the UN group is not enough, he should be sent back to Sri Lanka.

Truth and justice act very slow BUT certainly and heavily. It will be delivered on all who deserve. Period.

  6. The rule of law is defined as the legal dimension of the democratic process which seeks to ensure that government decisions are impersonal and subject to legal restraint. It also guarantees individual freedoms from arbitrary government and entitles the individual to due process of law.

Accountability arises from the rule of law.

The GOSL approved torture and disappearances of Tamils. It commited war crimes and Tamil genocide. The soldiers killed infants and estroyed villages. The killing fields were many.

The catalogue of crimes against humanity by SL is as long as it is ugly. Yet, the soldiers who committed these crimes and those in the GOSL who ordered the soldiers to commit the crimes are walking scot free.

Therefore, the GOSL occupies a very dark place in the minds of many across the world, as one unwilling to be accountable.

But will anyone ever arrest these dangerous criminals?

The UNHRC appears reluctant to bring the criminals who commit such crimes to accountability and justice.

If the soldiers in SL and the government are not made to face their Waterloo at the present UNHRC sessions in Geneva, one should expect SL to spiral back to commit adverse crime against humanity soon.

Furthermore, the people of Tamil Eelam deserve tom live very much better than the way in which they are forced to live and die. The UNHRC has a duty to provide that right to them.

The other members of the group were consulted before the head of the group told him that his participation is not appropriate or helpful.

In the interest of practicality and to help the Sri Lankan soldiers getting more peacekeeping jobs the government can ask a Career Diplomat to take over from the Major General and ask him to come back to SL and head a Corporation etc.

    Crooked General,

The post and the perks you are enjoying in New York is not because you deserve it but because carrying out the orders that came out of your command structure within the nation’s army.

I remember one thing that when Dixit the former HC of India gave a command to a counterpart of you within the IPKF to eliminate Piraphakaran when he came for a meeting, the IPKF General promptly told him that he would not take command outside his command structure within the Army.

There by he ensured the reputation of the ‘establishment of the Indian National Army’.

Your decision to accept the command from outside and carrying out that made the ‘Sri Lankan Army’ establishment a laughing stock of the world which should other ways have been extremely proud as the only Army in the world to eliminate Terrorism successfully.

Who knows, one day you would be court marshalled for carrying out command came from outside and at that time the powers that rewarded you those perks may not be there to help.

May be that you would have been promised these perks to take orders from outside and you carried out for your own selfishness.

Your deeds have put the nation and its President at extreme troubles that we see now and when they realise that you would be into more troubles.

    This some people say KARMA.
