EU council also backs move

The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU) has backed moves to keep Sri Lanka on the agenda of the UN Human Rights Council.

A statement by the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union said that the decision was taken yesterday when the council met to adopt its priorities at the UN Human Rights Council.

Earlier this month the EU Parliament had also adopted a resolution on Sri Lanka which calls for the establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry into some of the incidents which took place in Sri Lanka during the final stages of the war.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council however did not make reference to a UN probe but said it will encourage the Government of Sri Lanka to fully implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission as a first step.

“The EU will support efforts aimed at keeping the issue of accountability in Sri Lanka on the

agenda of the HRC. The EU will encourage the Government of Sri Lanka to fully implement

the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission as a first step,” the EU Foreign Affairs Council said.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council which met in Brussels yesterday also discussed Syria, Iran, Burma and Korea.
