Lanka will not fully implement LLRC report

The government says it will not fully implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) despite the resolution adopted by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Addressing the media today, government Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the government does not see the LLRC report as being a “Bible” despite the commission being appointed by the government itself.

He said that the commission, in formulating its recommendations, had in some instances gone beyond its mandate and as a result the government must now decide what to accept and what not to accept.

The UN Human Rights Council had last week adopted a resolution by a majority vote, calling for the full implementation of the LLRC report.

However de Silva said that the government has a duty to look at the repercussions implementing the full report may have on the country plus it also needs to form a consensus among its coalition partners.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the LLRC soon after a 30 year war between the army and the LTTE came to an end in 2009 with the defeat of the rebels.

A U.S sponsored resolution adopted by the UN Human Rights Council last week also had the support of India, Sri Lanka’s biggest neighbor.

However Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris said at the same press briefing that the government will not let foreign governments dictate to or direct the island nation on its domestic issues.

Sri Lanka also rejected calls to hold a referendum among the Sri Lankan public on the vote taken at the UN Human Rights Council.

The country’s Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said that such a referendum will need the consent of all the stake holders in the Sri Lankan government.

Only in Sri Lanka. The government refuses to implement it’s own recommendation. No wonder the rest of the world does not trust the Sri Lankan government. They speak with forked tongues.

The LLRC was cooked up with carefully chosen recipe ‘not for implementation’ BUT just to hookwink the IC. Unfortunately we fell into the pit we dug and find it a struggle or ‘impossible’ to escape.

demilitarize the north of Sri Lanka… ha ha ha ha ha .. thats like asking the BRAVE INDIAN JAWAN to leave Indian OCCUPIED J&K, Manipur and all other North Eastern states.. Or saying to the USA to leave diego garcia where they expelled all islanders to have their naval base.. we should follow the LLRc but never demilitarize the north of Sri Lanka ever. as for centuries this has been the achilles heel of our nation where Invasions, to Terror which came across the palk strait…. We lankans should never and as a ntional interest ever demilitarize the north of Sri Lanka or any other Key point around our Island.. The only time a reduce presence should be in the north if there was nothing across the Palk strait… But to our misfortune there is such a nation that introduced the Indian Taliban to Lanka.. and commited other serious violations in the forms of smuggling..

IN EUROPE THE LEADERS HAVE STARTED A NEW TREND IN THEIR POLITICAL THINKING.. AND TO SOME DEGREE THIS SHOULD APPLY AND APPLIES TO THE SITUATION IN LANKA.. THATS THE KEY WORD..INTEGRATION.. ESPICALLY HAS FAILED IN THE NORTH…. EG: WHEN TAMILS SETTLE ALL OVER SRI LANKA AND QUITE RIGHTLEY THEY ARE EXERCISING THEIR FUNDEMENTAL RIGHTS.. BUT WHEN SINHALA, MUSLIM, BUGHER, MALAY,SL CHINESE WISH TO SETTLE IN THE NORTH THE NORTHERN POLITICIANS AND THE LTTE DIASPORA SHOUT.. THEY ARE INVADEING SOCALLED TRADITIONAL TAMIL HOME LANDS.. NOW THE SETTLEMENT OF NON TAMILS IN THE NORTH ARE A KEY AND ESSENTIAL FOR FUTURE PEACE AND SHOULD BE IN THE LLRC AND ANY RESOLUTIONS.. YET NONE OF THE LTTE SUPPORTED INT NGOS SEEM TO MENTION THIS VERY BASCI RIGHT OF OTHER CITIZENS OF LANKA WHO ARE NOT OF TAMIL ORIGIN, BUT WISH TO SETTLE IN THE NORTH.. NOW LIKE THESE WESTERN POLITICIANS ARGUE INTEGRATION.. SHOULD THAT NOT BE APPLIED TO US LANKANS..??? SO WHY THE FEAR FROM THE LTTE DIASPORA.. I CHALLENGE GOSL TO INCLUDE THIS IN PART OF THE RECONCILIATION PROCESS..THUS ENDING LTTE RACIST POLITICS FOR EVER.. THIS INTEGRATION PROGRAMME IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THOUSANE TANK BATTLES.. THIS IS THE LAST CLOSING OF THE CIVIL WAR TO INTEGRATION NON TAMILS IN THE NORTH.

    Janaka says:

“demilitarize the north of Sri Lanka… ha ha ha ha ha .. thats like asking the BRAVE INDIAN JAWAN to leave Indian OCCUPIED J&K, Manipur and all other North Eastern states.. ”

No it isn’t. The Indian Jawan does not run the civil administration in J & K and the North Eastern states. Moreover, there are insurgent groups that still exist in those areas while the Sri-Lankan government claims that the LTTE has been completely destroyed in the entire island – so why the need for the military there?

“YET NONE OF THE LTTE SUPPORTED INT NGOS SEEM TO MENTION THIS VERY BASCI RIGHT OF OTHER CITIZENS OF LANKA WHO ARE NOT OF TAMIL ORIGIN, BUT WISH TO SETTLE IN THE NORTH..NOW LIKE THESE WESTERN POLITICIANS ARGUE INTEGRATION.. SHOULD THAT NOT BE APPLIED TO US LANKANS..??? ”

That’s because all the Sinhalese settlers that come to the North are government-sponsored. They are not coming of their own accord. In the west, the governments never plan a movement of a certain ethnic group, majority or otherwise to any specific areas. This is planned colonization – not natural movement of peoples.

As if you follow the Holy Bible as scriptured. When will these guys learn to talk sensibly and with responsibility? By giving such statements, he has proven the true colors of the govt.

I am surprised these clowns are implementing even a few. I thought the whole thing would have ended up in the garbage.

Intergration with guns to the head won’t work and there are already animosity between the races and mistrust prevails.
Minorities, especially Tamils have suffered enough in the last sixty years so badly that they just won’t forget the atrocities committed and live in peace under army occupation and colonization. Will the Govt. colonize areas like Panadura, Kalutara or Hambantota with Tamils from the north , with army protection & full Govt. assistance and the Sinhala masses in those areas accept Tamils as their neighbors ? Will that bring intergration ? Never !
Various communities living in capital Colombo & suburbs are different as Colombo is the capital city & a cosmopolitan centre. There are cultural, language and religious differences between these communities. They all have their own way of living, mingling. Government should not interfere in their free movements or forcibly colonize any areas as .It won’t work here in Sri Lanka. Those days are gone unfortunately. This kind of intergration mechanism or militarization of North & east won’t bring any desired result but absolute chaos. Things can only back fire instead.
This Govt. just doesn’t know what they are doing. One can only expect more calamities and no solutions for anything.

  7. SriLankan Govt should implement LLRC recommendations honestly.
