Legal action on some websites

The government is contemplating legal action against some websites which had published defamatory articles on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family.

Acting Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told reporters today that he had submitted a report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday regarding some websites.

The Minister said that while newspapers and the electronic media in Sri Lanka can be monitored, it is difficult to do the same on the various websites which publish articles on Sri Lanka.

He said most of these websites which are not registered with the Media Ministry violate media ethics and the media culture.

The Minister said that appropriate action will be taken against these websites and subsequently legal action will also be considered.

Meanwhile Yapa also condemned the actions of Minister Mervyn Silva for threatening journalists through the media.

Yapa said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) must take action against the Minister.

One sentence in this report is a dead give-away. It reads:
“The Minister said that appropriate action will be taken against these websites and subsequently legal action will also be considered.”

Think is a difference in this government’s definition of “appropriate” action and “legal” action. Says it all! We can expect the continuation of the former, presumably with the employment of white vans as long as this lot are in power!

The actions are not mutually exclusive; first might arrive ‘white vans’ to fetch whoever and then legal action in a court of law. Double jeopardy most likely does not operate under the PTA anyway in the Republic of Republics.
