Fraud Investigation At Malik’s Group

Malik Samarawickrama

Companies connected to Malik Samarawickrama, have launched an internal investigation into an alleged Rs. 80 Million fraud. Samarawickrama is one of the major players in the garment industry.
His companies include the Penguin garment group and Hoodvian. Sources speaking on condition of anonymity have indicated that the fraud has been committed by a group of persons trusted by Samarawickrama over a number of years. The same sources commented that Malik  Samarawickrama was “very angry and hurt” by the turn of events especially because they appear to have committed the fraud whilst enjoying the confidence, trust and authority bestowed upon them by Samarawickrama.
Sources close to the successful group indicated that the internal inquiry will be finished next week and that to release details now could be ‘unfair’ to those being investigated.
Samarawickrama is a well known patron of Rugby in Sri Lanka and as well as being a very close and long standing confidante of Ranil Wickremesinghe, was one time the Chairman of the United National Party. However, Samarawickrama also maintains close contacts with the highest levels of government – showcased recently when he was to receive a call from the Presidential entourage at the time in Pakistan; the President’s concern with the United National Party’s statement on the LLRC was communicated to the Opposition Leader through Samarawickrama.
