Cabinet approves spot fine

The cabinet has approved a proposal to impose a spot fine on drivers who violate seat belt rules, cabinet spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today.

Addressing the weekly cabinet press briefing the Minister said that the Motor Traffic Act will be amended to accommodate the change.

Following its implementation a spot fine of Rs. 1000 will be charged from drivers violating the seat belt rules.

At present drivers must appear in court to pay a fine for violating the rule which came into effect last year.
