Jaffna Residents Harassed By EPDP

By Raisa Wickrematunge

Residents in the islands of Jaffna said that candidates from the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) had threatened and harassed them.
One of the recent suspects in a rape case was an EPDP candidate, they charged. ‘When an election comes up, the politicians make promises, but they give us nothing,’ one of the islanders said.
Others said that an EPDP candidate had told residents in the Thellipelai area in Mallayam to vote for him, and they had promised to do so under duress. However when the results came in it was evident that many in the area had voted for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). On discovering this, the EPDP candidate had threatened the residents, the people claimed.
EPDP MP Douglas Devananda was not available for comment. However a member of the EPDP clarified that the suspect in the rape case had been a member of the EPDP a long time before the incident. He also said that the Tamil media was to be blamed for sensationalizing such incidents out of proportion, pointing out that ‘these cases happen in the South, too, but the media does not give as much prominence to them.’

Why does not the government disarm the armed goons of EPDP?
This is one of the suggestions of the LLRC report. Many had testified about the harassment & criminal acts of / by EPDP members and Devananda had said that he will sue the LLRC commission – but he has got cold feet.
But with all this, he was seen to have replaced Ambassador Kunanayakam during the UNHRC resolution debate.
This government prefers a leader of armed goons to a career diplomat.

Please tell Mohan Peris will you,

  3. Rape is sensationalized by media? Rape is a very serios matter and in some Countries, a rapist is punished by Death. For a EPDP member to say that these things happen in the South of the Country but it is not taken as a serious matter shows his low mental development about society. What a shame the Government of Sri Lanka!

SO WHAT IS THE ATTORNEY GENERAL DOING ON THIS , OH SORRY HE CANNOT AS HE IS BEEN POCKETED OUT BY MR , THEN WHERE THE CJ , OH SORRY SHE TOO BEEN POCKETED , IF THEY OPEN THE MOUTH THE WHITE VAN AT THEIR DOOR STEP AND ENDING SIX FEET UNDERGROUND

douglas is the god of jaffna, ruling jaffna with iron grip with the blessings of raja mahinda bros & sons. everyone knows this, no one can dare to talk about it. one day douglas might become the president of sri lanka, no one knows.
EDPD members recently killed a school boy n burried it, in another instance raped n killed a 13 year old girl? how did they get the guts to do this? coz they know they will not be punished. no one will take action against them.
douglas has a massive paramilitary force with about 10,000+ shoulders. they have to feed their family, so they extract douglas tax from them. gov tax 40%, then dougas tax 30%, so total tax 70%. how can those people live? either gov should collect tax or douglas should collect tax, not both

May be the Jaffna residents are harassing the EPDP.

    • naman

That can not happen when north is occupied by Sinhala armed forces charged to do Ma Ra’s dic tats.
People are scared of the forces and EPDP and certainly not the other way.
Only the People with the deranged brains will do so

How dare the EPDP member says ‘that these things happen in the south’. Whether it happens in the East, West, North or South it is an offence. It should not be taken lightly and blame the media for highlighting the situation.

  8. Gotta the hero

Sakilliya Douglas is a MR dog. He has been given the freedom to do whatever he wants. I hated the LTTE but for this kind of thing, you need to revive at least 5 members of the LTTE and put them in Jaffna.
