The Uva Vipers and the Jaffna Challengers stole the show on the first day of theCarlton7’s tournament and topped their respective tables amidst a large number of spectators who had gathered to watch an electrifying display of seven-a-sideRugby.

The tournament, which is known for its carnival atmosphere, did not only entertain the crowds off the field but with the inclusion of world-class 7’s players such as Zah Lawrence,All black 7’s D J Forbes, Englishman Dan Norton gave the crowds a thrilling display of Rugby. It was even better to see that the local talent could match these international giants. All teams had a taste of both triumph and defeat during the day but the Jaffna Challengers stood out from the rest to stay unbeaten on the 1st day of the tournament.

For the Challengers Dulip Mathruwan stood out while the four Fijian nationals helped immensely to their success nati Osea Kolinsau,Setefano Cakaunivalu,Nasoni Roko,Taniela Rawaqa were brilliant and combined well with the local players. For the Uva Vipers sphere headed by All blacks 7’s skipper D J Forbes the Costa brothers Lasintha and Ashan together with Rizah Mubarak and Tamazi Kama contributed to their performance. On the other hand for the Central Kings under Dan Norton and Matt Turner’s guidance managed three wins out of the four matches played. Also for the Central Kings Nigel Ratwatte,Rajitha Sansoni and Zah Lawrence did not fail to make their presence felt on the field. Along with these three teams, the western Warriors to registered three wins going down only to a strong Jaffna Challengers outfit. Amongst other players who impressed on day 1 were Sandun Herath,Dinusha Chathuranga,Chula Susantha  and Sabaragamuwa stallions skipper Saliya Hadapangoda who was brilliant and led form the front.
