Birthday Boy Bhupathi Celebrates With Mixed Doubles Title
Indian pair Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza won the mixed doubles title at the French Open with a straight-sets victory over Santiago Gonzalez and Klaudia Jans-Ignacik.
Bhupathi and Mirza beat the unseeded Mexican-Polish partnership 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 in the 73-minute final on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The seventh seeds broke serve three times in the second set with Bhupathi celebrating victory on his 38th birthday. Bhupathi said: “What more can a guy ask for his birthday? That’s an amazing day to play a Grand Slam final on your birthday. It’s happened twice to me, both wins and both here in Paris. Now we’re going to go celebrate.
“We play a dangerous kind of tennis. When we’re playing well, it’s kind of hard to beat us. We played well the whole two weeks here, so I think we deserved to win.”
Mirza added: “Now I don’t have to think of a gift to give him.”
It was the third time that Mirza and Bhupathi had reached a Grand Slam final together. They were Australian Open winners three years ago.
