An impressive display by CR & FC helped them overcome a second half rally by Air Force to power to a 44-29 win in their Dialog inter Club rugby football match at Longden Place on Friday.
The home team seemed to have taken a lesson or two from their last outing as they put on a good all round display of rugby at their home grounds. CR’s points came from 4 goals, 2 tries and 2 penalties and Airforce’s response was 3 goals, 1 try and a penalty.
CR attacked right from the beginning not allowing Air Force to settle down and the foreign combination for CR of Luke Muggeridge and Slieimenkhel Sabir from New Zealand combined exceptionally well at fly half and inside centre. Sabir was definitely the man of the match as he scored 4 of the tries and Luke Muggeridge had a good day with the boot converting four of the six tries scored.
CR & FC looked dangerous with ball in hand and hardly gave a chance to the Airmen to attack in the first half which saw the lads in the red jersey having a comfortable lead at half time 25-3. After the break CR extended their lead through a well executed set piece move and Luke Muggeridge added the extra points 32-3.
Suddenly Air Force came storming back and controlled play for some time. They struck first with an unconverted try scored by no 6 Kulukulasooriya. 32-8 and 30 minutes remaining in the game Air Force did have chance to come back if they maintained the momentum. However CR managed to extend the lead when Luke Muggeridge showed a bit of individual brilliance when he chipped a ball off the ruck and collected himself to touch down for the fifth try scored for CR & FC.
With the score reading 37-8 Air Force had lots to do to come back into the game. However they were successful in putting up a late rally to score two tries through Dinesh Weeraratne. Air force did pick their game up in the 2nd half but it was just too late as CR & FC ended the game on a happy note with the second consecutive victory under their belt.
