Jaffna Medics Threaten To Strike

Doctors and medical staff of the Jaffna teaching hospital have threatened to stage a strike this week over the attack on the house of a cancer surgeon in Jaffna.
The house of Dr Jeyakumar was attacked on Thursday by a masked gang who had also pasted a note on the wall calling him a traitor.
According to the police the window glasses of the house were damaged during the pre-dawn attack but no one was injured.
Dr Jeyakumar said that he suspected the attack was in retaliation to a complaint he had lodged over the removal of some hospital equipment including a generator recently without prior approval.
The equipment including the generator worth nearly Rs. 400,000 were returned to the hospital following the complaint.
Following this a doctor attached to the hospital was transferred to Colombo over his alleged involvement in the attempt to remove the equipment without obtaining approval from the relevant authorities.
Medical staff at the Jaffna teaching hospital staged a token strike on Thursday over the attack on Dr Jeyakumar’s house.
The doctors and staff at the hospital have now warned that they will launch a strike this week if the suspects involved in the attack are not dealt with under the law. (ER)
