Big Brother Is Watching

The reason why authorized money changers have been asked to instal CCTV cameras in their premises is to ensure that they give receipts to their customers and also to act as a deterrent by preventing them from selling foreign exchange (forex), Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Deputy Governor B.D.W.A. Silva told this reporter.
Only commercial banks are authorized to sell forex, besides being also allowed to accept the same.
As a result, forex deposits in banks made by these dealers have had increased this year to date, compared to the previous years because of this ruling, he said. Money changers are expected to deposit their forex earnings in banks. The receipt is useful to a foreigner who is leaving the country and who wants to reconvert his rupees in to forex, added Silva.
Authorised supermarkets also can accept forex. Those are however already equipped with surveillance cameras, he said.
