The Presidential Advisor on Agricultural Development Dr. Hemakumara Nanayakkara has resigned from his post.
Nanayakkara resigned over moves to use land with crops to construct a new airport in the Nuwera Eliya district which will result in several acres of crops being destroyed.
He was a former Minister of Agriculture in the Mahinda Rajapaksa government before he resigned over poor health and was later appointed a Presidential advisor.
Nanayakkara has said that bean crops will be destroyed as a result of the construction of the airport and he sees that as a national concern.
He also said that he will be taking a decision on his political stand in the immediate future as well.
Nanayakkara was earlier in the UNP but joined the government with Karu Jayasuriya and a few other UNP members.
He remained with the government when Jayasuriya re-joined the UNP.
