SOSL – Young Soloists Concert 28th OF JULY 2012
Once again, on 28th of July, 2012 the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) will feature outstanding young Sri Lankan classical musicians at its Young Soloists Concert, in its endeavour to encourage western classical music among the young Sri Lankans as well as to provide talented young musicians an opportunity to perform as soloists with an orchestra giving them the exposure needed to pursue their careers in western classical music.
This year the SOSL will present as soloists two instrumentalists, Louis Page (Piano) and Mangala Abeysekera (Viola) and two vocalists, Thivanthi Perera (Soprano) and Laknath Seneviratne (Bass).
Louis Page who studied piano with Bruce Sutherland in California, has given several solo recitals. He will be performing one of the most poetic of romantic piano concertos, F. Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Mangala Abeysekera, a pupil of Ananda Dabare, is a member of the viola section of the SOSL. She will be performing the viola concerto in D by K. Stamitz, which is probably his best known work, and is a good example of the early classical concerto.
Thivanthi Perera, a voice pupil of Naomi Guneratne, is also an accomplished pianist and violinist. She is a member of the violin section of the SOSL. She will be performing three popular arias from the operatic repertoire, Mozart’s ‘Dove Sono’ from ‘The marriage of Figaro’, Puccini’s ‘Musetta’s Waltz’ from ‘La Boheme’ and Dvorak’s ‘Song to the moon’ from ‘Rusalka’.
Laknath Seneviratne, a pupil of Menaka de Fonseka has performed in several productions directed by her. He will be performing Mozart’s ‘Se vuol Ballare’ from the ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and the delightful aria ‘Der vogelfanger bin ich ja’ from the ‘Magic Flute’, and the ‘Toreador song’ from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’. The orchestra will be conducted by Ananda Dabare.
The Young Soloists Concert is being sponsored for the 17th year in succession by the HSBC who has always supported the SOSL in its endeavour to ‘invest in youth’. The concert will be held at the Ladies’ College Hall, Colombo 7 on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 7pm. The Box Plan and tickets will be available from July 10, 2012 at the Lionel Wendt.
