The Monsoons Have Arrived

The South-Western Monsoons have finally arrived, after a short delay, according to the Director General of the Meteorological Department, S. Kariyawasam.
Kariyawasam said that, “after a couple of weeks delay Sri Lanka is finally experiencing the South-Western Monsoons.” He explained that the weather system required for the monsoons had arrived in Northern India a week ago, before traveling south to Sri Lanka.
He said that while scientists had attributed the changing weather patterns to global warming, there was no concrete evidence to suggest that was the main cause. “Global warming may have an impact on our weather patterns, but it is impossible to say how big an impact this is”, he said.
Kariyawasam added that while rainfall is expected around the country, the catchment areas will not receive as much as they hoped for. “The catchment areas are on the Western slopes of the country, as such this means that the rainfall would not be falling in those areas”, he said.
