Nine suspects, arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl have been released on bail, according to police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana.
The suspects were released on cash bail in Rs. 25,000 each.
Rohana explained that the police could not continue to keep the accused in remand any longer, and that they had been granted bail on the instructions of the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court. He added that the owner of the guest house was still in custody as his son, who had also been accused of raping the girl, had not turned himself in.
The spokesman said that investigations were continuing into the incident.
In June this year a thirteen year old girl fled her home at Hakamana to Tangalle to escape her uncle who had been raping her. In Tangalle she was employed as a sales girl at Ruwan Textile. However, the owner of the shop along with seven other men allegedly sexually abused the girl for three days at the Namal Guest House and Restaurant.
She was then taken to several different hotels where she was again sexually abused by many others, before being handed over to the police.

Nine suspected rapists of a 9-year girl were released on bail because ” police could not continue to keep the accused in remand any longer”. The police do not arrest murder suspects who enjoy government support. In many cases those arrested are set free following pressure from above within the MoD. Thousands are kept in detention without charges for many years either because they have no friends in higher places or belonged to an ethnic minority, this is the justice of Rajapakse family.
MR ‘s regime we have seen law and order going down everyday. This is another incident – rape – they need to amend the law – these suspects will go scot free take my word.
