New Champs Haviesadd icing on their cake with smashing 22-13 win over Navy

  • Dialog A Division Inter Club Rugby

Havelocks skipper Henry Terrence receives the Dialog Trophy from Hans Wijesuriya CEO of Dialog and The jubilant havelocks team celebrate their winning the League Championship

Newly crowned champions for 2012 the Havelocks SC  ended their 2012  season in style beating their closest rivals to the throne – the Navy SC 22-13 to add the icing on their celebration cake in their Dialog A Division inter club encounter at Welisara on Saturday.

Havelocks scored their points through 2 goals, 1 try and a penalty to which Navy replied with just 1 goal and 2 penalties. The winners led 12-10 at half time.

Although the league champions had been decided the previous week effectively making the game a ‘dead one’ in terms of the championship, both teams had plenty at stake which resulted in a toughly contested game.

Navy beaten by the Havelocks at the latter’s grounds would have been hoping to use ‘home advantage’ to put one over the newly crowned champions. Havelocks on the other hand would not want to lose to Navy after getting their new tag of League Championsas a defeat would have taken some of the lustre away from the achievement.

Havelocks drew first blood in only the third minute through a try by Lee Keegal. The conversion was missed but the visitors were leading 5-0. Play see sawed from side to side as both teams sought to dictate the pace of the game and it was only in the 18th minute that Fijian Stefano scored a try for Navy which was converted by DevAnand to put the hosts in front 7-5.

Havelocks response came in the 30th minute when fly half William Hakalo burst through the Navy defence to score a try which he himself converted. Havelocks were now once again in the lead 12-7 and on the stroke of half time DevAnand put over a penalty for Navy and whittled the lead down to just two point at the break 12-10.

After the resumptionHakaloput over a penalty to give Havelocks a five-point cushion at 15-10. But Hakalo was not quite finished – he breached the Navy defence and planted his second try which he also converted to put Havelocks firmly in control at 22-10.

Anand gave the hosts their first points in the second half with another accurate penalty kick but despite all their efforts that was all the scoring the Navy could manage and Havelocks ran out worthy winners by 22-13.

The final whistle was the signal for the Park club to start their celebrations having clinched the league championship after a lapse of 30 years and reviving memories of their halcyon days in the 70’s when they were undisputed champions.

There was no scoring during final quarter of play as Navy SC was unable to penetrate the Haviesdefnece.  As the final whistle was blown to the final finally f the season, it was a great moment for the New Champs winning the league for the first time in 30 long years.

“GO HAVIES GO” – well done my club, which I supports for the last 4o yrs. From the 70′s to 2008, I have hardly missed any games played by Havies for the period and was disappointed during the 90′s and 2000 due to the poor performance and even though I left the country in 2008, been in touch via inter-net with regard to their performances. What a change and the entire structure is changed including the playing arena, the team and we’ve got those old supporter’s back at the park. Keep shouting “Go Havies Go” – Congratulations my boys.

Navy is a team paid by the public. How do they finance a Fijian to play in the team?

Rubert, You are too cheeky. Well we both know who is paying that money from our own pocket. After all stealing is an art for the entire family. All of them deserve doctorates for that alone, educated or not.

I am a Kandy supporter but congratulate Havies on their performance. Well done.

I am so surprised luckily Navy didnt pull an issue.

How did the ”poor losers” take up this defeat this time?? Thought Navy might do more drastic things once they lost…Very Unusual for the -Pakses and the rest of the Navy Hooligans.

What a nice feeling after just winning a single match against a couple of juniot Pukshes. What an euphoria the people would go through when beating the Senior Pukses. What a day will it be :)
