Maharoof Evades Payment For Damages

By Dinouk Colombage

UPFA Group Leader of the CMC, M. H. Maharoof, has been accused of avoiding payment for the damages he caused to a vehicle owned by Dr Curt Twerenbold on March 6 this year.
After months of evading, Maharoof was sent an official letter from Twerenbold’s lawyers demanding payment be made for the damages to his vehicle.  According to the receipt from Nadeesha Motors, the company that repaired Twerenbold’s BMW, the total cost was Rs. 24,000.
However, according to Twerenbold’s lawyers there has been no response to the letter sent to Maharoof.
On March 6, around midnight Twerenbold was driving down Dharmapala Mawatha when he was forced to stop due to ongoing road construction. At that point Twerenbold said that another car, driven by Maharoof, knocked the front of his car. Maharoof had got out of his car and took the responsibility for the damage offering to pay for the repairs. He noted down Twerenbold’s contact details and promised to call him the next day, which he never did.
Twerenbold, who had recorded the license plate number on the vehicle, found out that the car was registered with Malkey Limited (a car rental agency). After the agency was contacted on the accident, Maharoof had contacted Twerenbold. He had apologised for not contacting him and once again promised to pay for the damages.  Since notifying Maharoof of the cost of the damages Twerenbold had been unable to contact the politician. His lawyers are now taking legal action against Maharoof demanding payment of up to Rs. 50,000 as well as all legal costs.
Maharoof refused to comment on the incident when contacted.
