Kovil Ritual To Go Ahead

  • Animal Sacrifices At Munneswaram After September 12

By Indika Sri Aravinda

The government has agreed to allow the Munneswaram Kovil to proceed with their animal sacrifices, Hindu Affairs Advisor to the President Ravi Shankar said.
He said that the agreement had been reached between the chief priest of the temple Kali Mutta Shivapada Sundaram and President’s Secretary, Lalith Weeratunge.
Animal sacrifices can take place after September 12, when the sacred Kapila Vastu relics leave the island, Weeratunge has told Sundaram.
Sundaram and Weeratunge met last Tuesday, where Weeratunge conveyed the President’s gratitude for postponing the sacrifices.
Weeratunge, who said that he has also visited the sacrifices several times, had assured police protection for the sacrifices to move forward.
Weeratunge advised Sundaram to inform him on the proposed date for the sacrifice, to ensure that the ritual takes place without outside influence or protests. Sundaram was however questioned the next day for close to three hours by the Chilaw police, citing a complaint by a Buddhist monk.
A special police team has been deployed at the Temple, who are alleged to have inspected the various rituals that are taking place at the temple.
Presidential advisor Shankar had instructed the priests of the temple to inform Weeratunge of the harassment by police officers. Sundaram claims that First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, President’s Chief of Staff Gamini Senerath and late President Ranasinghe Premadasa have taken part in the ritual sacrifices.
Premadasa is said to have imported four white goats from Pakistan specifically for the sacrifice.
Minister of Public Relations, Dr Mervyn Silva, vowed earlier to stop the sacrifices at any cost.

The first lady from her Christian background offering animal sacrifices to the Godessand the leader of the opposition seeking too is at the kovil for the same purpose ‘ . Then how can we point the finger at the ordinary mortals sacrificing an innocent animal and torturing same in the name of fulfilling a vow or interceding to bring down wrath of Kali on enemies .. What fear drives these leaders and people to such rituals .President Premadasa always had to do one better and import ed white goats to be offered to a black diety .Such was his oppulence . such was his fear ..The leaders of the day sounds very hypocritical when they stalled the killing only for the time of the Kapilavastu relics in the country . The teachings of the Venerable Preacher is also interpreted to accomadate their fears or their discontent .

Was the suspension of the sacrifice truly arranged to respect the exposition of the Kapilavastu Relics? Non sense. It was done to prevent the Tamils supporting the UPFA from going against the them in the PC elections. Now the elections are over, the ban will come again and Dr. Mervyn will be instructed to go there to create problems. Premadasa also protrayed himself to be a great Buddhist but he too resorted to several anti-Buddhist actions. Besides the goat import mentioned, if it is true, he also had killier gangs to do away with opponents. The worst of all is that it is said that he got down a Malayalee manthrakaraya to do manthrams for his success. These same practices are being followed by his successors as well, of course leaving Chandrika who did not use any religion to cheat the people.

“Lanka Muslim, UK” – You do not represent the Muslims of UK. Do not use your religious or racial affilications for your personal comments!

        • Lanka Muslim, UK

          CORRECTED VERSION:
What made you to assume that I am trying to represent the Muslims of UK (which means all the Muslims from various countries). I do not claim so and not even as representing Sri Lanka Muslims in the UK. The name used clearly means that I am a Muslim from Sri Lanka living in the UK. Also can you please point out anything in my comment conveying racial views. If so, I would withdraw such comments and would also apologise. I respect all religions, friendly with people of all communities and believe in tolerance of on and another and unity. As I talk of people of other faiths who talk of their religion but behave differently also talk of those who claim to be good Muslims but behave differently. It is my policy to expose hypocrisy from whomever or wherever it comes from.

  2. Whatever is said or done Animal Sacrifices should be permitted in any place, especially in any Worshiping Place.

  3. Roy

It looks like some of our politicians who are Buddhists have practiced Hinduism by sacrificing animals. They don’t seem to have faith in a godless religion.

    • human

Budhisam is not a religion. its based on philosophy. Thats leads to God.

      • Matalan

You mean – “Buddhism is not a religion, its a philosophy”. Right?
Can’t understand what you mean by ‘thats leads to God’.
Buddhism leads to no God, rather it guides a follower to end the constant karmic cycle of re-births by attaining the state of Nirvana through one’s own effort and not through prayers and offerings.

        • vedic

So, If the Buddhism is only philosophy why Buddhists torture the giant animals elephants in chains everywhere taking in Perahara. Mind you elephants belongs to jungle and should be free too.
At least these sacrificed animals can be used for food But Perahara for what?

  4. Derby

Obviously, sacrificing 4 white goats did not help Premadasa from being blasted to high heaven. More likey, the sacrifice helped him to get blown up to bits. What makes the others who sacrifice animals think that they would be different from Premadasa!!! Time to call BBC and asked them to video and broadcast the whole sacrficial thing to the world!!! Let’s see who will want to visit SriLanka then!!!

  5. Mervyn

All these sacrifices which are practised by Hindus for over thousands of years are only done to give satisfactions to the timids who has underdeveloped mental capacities (including the people mentioned by the chief Sundaram) who believes that by offering somebody’s life in the name of a Hindu God they believe will solve the problems and bring prosperity to them. Even in the Mayan Era (South America)they sacrificed humans to satisfy the Gods expecting it will bring them prosperity, but their culture vanished instead of prosperity. In reality no God will expect a follwer of HIM/HER to sacrifice another life just to honour them. The Gods must be disgusted and shunting these ignorant people who sacrifices lives to gain their favours. In my view the believers of these Gods should start a campaign to offer flowers and fruits to Gods (since Gods can only inhale the scent) instead of sacrificing life to honour them in this 21st century or they should start to sacrifice the life of a family member in the name of the God they believe. I doubt if there will be a single volunteer for this act even if they believe that the sacrifice will bring them prosperity or solve their problems.

      Hi Mervyn
Thank you for your comment, hope these stupid people who believe in animal sacrifice develop their mental capacity to understand what is right and wrong. We are living in 21st century and not in stone age.

Agree whole heartedly with Dot, Roy and Mervyn. Only a demon or demoness will yearn for blood, that too forcibly piped out by beheading an innocent animal amidst fear, stress and excruciating pain. To benefit from the blessing of a so called god or goddess why is it always an animal that has to pay with its life? Cannot the animal expect an opportunity to be spared its life, never mind a blessing from this goddess? Why is it that the human (who drags the animal to the sacrificial platform and brings down the gigantic machete on the furiously struggling, goat’s head whose eyes bulge out in extreme fear) is blessed with compassion and material benefits from this goddess and not the animal, who can surely do with a little salvation and compassion, if ever there’s one who needs it most? Thousands of innocent men, women, children and babies were sacrificed in the past in the belief that blessings, hidden treasures and salvation from natural disasters will be provided by gods, in the past. Common sense has prevailed for these meaningless, naive practices to be limited to a few societies and to animals. It is a thorough shame though that Sri Lanka who boasts of practicing the purest form of Buddhism and had been blessed with 3 visits by Lord Buddha is one such society where animals are killed to appease a goddess in this 21st century. My advise is: if you love the goddess so much, behead yourself or get a friend to do that for you.

  7. kuma

GO MERVIN GO IF THEY GO AHEAD WITH THIS STUPID KILLING IN THE NAME OF GOD HERE AFTER DON’T SUPPLY HORA GANU TO OUR RAJA PARAYA.

  8. ranjith chandrasekera

This will become widespread public anger. Allowing animal sacrifice is unbelievable and this nothing but to gain the support of blood thirsty priest and the stupid believers of evil Goddess. What a joke is this, this is something similar to “wait till Buddha leaves Sri Lanka, and go ahead with the killing of innocent animals”.

Where is minister Mervyn Silva, show your colours and stop this mass murder.

    Ranjith Chandrasekera

  9. suren soysa

There are greater evils perpetrated in this predominantly Buddhist country against humanity, from time immemorial. Criminalization of politics, law & order are the issues that need be dealt forthwith & not some isolated & traditional animal sacrifice that does not impact the people at large. In the present scenario Dr.Silva has to make the protest at “Temple trees” or at Mr.Weerathunga’s office! If the coloured Urine bath did not soften Dr.Silva, his stupid actions will never change anything in this country.

  10. Jayantha

Its a traditional from the history comes from , we cannot stop all what it mean , look , most of politican is the one create all this stupid alligation to show up there popularities , example they says we can live withing Rs 2500 per family in a month , but they ask there salary increases for living , this how its goes ,
Religions are faith so lets respect all in same , dont get panic on this ,

  11. Kumar

I am totally against of animal sacrifices in the name of religion. Let all of us fight agaist this regardless of your religion. This should not be taken as against of Hindusum

    • Sucharitha

you cant go against those rituals that they have been for generatios. So, it is pointless to make efforts to go against their rituals. If this is the case, India would not exist any more – as a single country- whose traditions sometimes the western world would never be able to grasp. People of our country should realize, there are also other religious adherents who would like to continue their practises as they feel are correct to them.

  12. Newton

Weeratunga has become the spokesperson of “political mileage’ . One of the strongmen of the governing party vehemently protested against this religious ritual to get highest political mileage. Now it looks like all political party leaders have participated in the religious ritual. So what was the big deal that the politician getting involved in this affair. How long are we going to tolerate watching political entertainers hijacking the nations agenda for personal gains.

  13. naman

I agree with Dr.Mervyn Silva only on this occasion.
Stop the ritual of merciless killing.
President agrees to it because he has sacrificed Primates as well!!!

  14. Kosala

Don’t agree with this nonsensical and a cruel act of animal killing. These so called Gods were simply powerless and couldn’t do anything for 3 decades when the deadly terrorists were killing innocent people in our country.

  15. punchinilame

Even in this 21st century one must know why this ritual is being practised.

Pusari should start early and keep time to cut Mervi’s neck as soon as he comes,As he wants to be First in every thing.

    • Rubert Vanderkoon

The best for Pusari to show his faith to his so calle Goddess and the blind faithed people, is to chop his private parts first and prove that he really is only interested in Goddess’ powers not anything else.

  17. human

I think This is a excellent oppurtunity for Mr. mervin silva to protest peacefuly and show the world sri lanka is not a stone aged country./ cannibals are no more.

  18. KUMARA

lets all get together against this situation coz innocent lives of these animals are not for the gods gods gave the chance to live how can they again ask for these lives.nonsense.all lunatics.we all with u mervin.you should do the thing that president cannot.all the best.

  19. Neil

THIS IS INTOLERABLE AND WILL SPELL RUINATION TO ALL WHO SANCTION, AID AND ABET SUCH HEINOUS ACTS ACCORDING THE LAW OF KARMA, WHICH IS UNIVERSAL, BUT EXPLAINED TO ITS BEST BY LORD BUDDHA. WHAT HYPOCRISY TO GIVE A TIMELINE UNDER A VEIL OF BOGUS PIETY THAT WILL MAKE ONE DOUBT THE GENUINENESS SURROUNDING THE EXPOSITION OF SACRED KAPILA VASTU RELICS WHERE THE PLACES COINCIDED WITH THE PALATH SABHA ELECTIONS. WHAT A SHAME FOR OTHERWISE A GREAT BUDDHIST NATION!

  20. Rubert Vanderkoon

What a sad country we live in. The president’s secretary, who is supposed to be an educated guy to help the elected man, agreeing to barbarism and mythical stupidty, signifies the pre-hitoric times we are till stuck in while the rest of the world is moving on. It is time we all do something against this because it is not fair the animals have to suffer to make rogue kovil guys happy.
On a different note, now there is a chance for leagalissing barbaric, neanderthal and blind acts of under-developed brains at Katharagama Devale like walking on fire and piercing all over for blind faith as well. Just talk to the Secretary to the president.

  21. roshan London

Lanka Muslim, do not post your nonsense- this shows yiur stupidity and you are neithea muslim nor uk lanka muslim.

  22. Arunachan

First of all, shame on you Shee ran thee. Being a Catholic you do not seem to know the Ten Commandments. Especially the fifth commandment which specifically commands, I repeat commands, “Thou Shall Not Kill”. For the savage Weeratunga all I have to say is ‘you will suffer a worse fate than Premadasa for sanctioning the spilling of innocent blood. To Rajapakse ‘Don’t condone killings for a fistful of votes”. If you a so blood thirsty bring back the death penalty. At least it will rid the country of some professional killers. Dear Mervin if you cannot target the Poosari, target those who drag the innocent creatures to be killed and you will reap your reward someday.

  26. Is this the same JHU that passed the casino bill?

No spine to question why the Relic was kept only in Siyampoli temples (multy nikaya,-Amarapura origin, Gangaramaya, was only an after thought with the weeks extension), but more concerned of goats

    Mervin Dura people are the big Kali people;

I think first of all we must think and come to a rational decision whether a god would like to have sacrifices and for what? Bloody sacrifices reveal that god is not a god of love. but blood thirsty one.
