Karu To Meet Polls Chief On Ballot Papers

By Indika Sri Aravinda

UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya is to meet Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya this week to discuss the recovery of some ballot papers from a drain in Ratnapura soon after the 2010 Presidential elections.
Jayasuriya told The Sunday Leader that 64 ballot papers had been found from the drain by a provincial council member.
Following a request put forward to the then Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, the UNP MP said he kept some of the recovered ballot papers with him.
He claimed that investigations at the time had found that the ballot papers were authentic and had been used at the 2010 Presidential elections.
Jayasuriya said that among the ballot papers found were those marked in favour of former Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka.
The UNP MP said that the former Elections Chief had failed to take any action on the issue and as a result he had decided to discuss the issue with the current Elections Commissioner on Tuesday.
Recently another set of ballot papers marked in favour of Fonseka were found near a school in Nittambuwa.
