More Ex-LTTE Cadres To Join Politics

By Indika Sri Aravinda

Minister of Prisons Chandrasiri Gajadheera said that several rehabilitated ex LTTE cadres have expressed interest to enter mainstream politics. He said that measures would be taken for them to contest Urban Council, Provincial Council and Pradeshiya Sabha elections in a democratic manner.

“The Tamil Diaspora and other elements that attempt to disrupt peaceful existence in the country are organising themselves to entice the Tamil youth back into battle. However we have appealed to the Tamil youth to resist such sinister attempts and enter politics in a democratic manner to win their rights and demands,” the Minister said.

He said that so far there are six rehabilitated ex cadres who have expressed their desire to contest the next election.

“Even today we have a former prominent LTTE member who is a cabinet minister Karuna Amman, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, who was the former chief minister of the east. Former LTTE media coordinator Daya Master will contest the next election. Similarly anyone who wishes could enter politics and contribute toward the country’s development,” the Minister said.

So far around 12,000 ex LTTE cadres including some rebel leaders have been rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.
