Typhoons and Northern Gladiators dominate opening day

  • Carlton Super 7’s – 1st round – Nuwara Eliya

The opening day of the 2013 edition of the Carlton super Rugby sevens was kicked off in grand style in  Nuwara Eliya on Saturday when the first off the two local tournaments was held at the picturesque Nuwara Eliya Race course affording an opportunity to the hill country to witness the sports local talent. This tournament is the lead up to the first international tournament which is scheduled to be held on the 27th & 28th of July in the Galle cricket stadium.

The ten participating teams were divided into two groups, in the pool A North Central Typhoons led by Sri Lanka veteran  centre three quarter Pradeep Liyanage dominated their group by winning all four matches proceeding ahead to the next round. They were followed by Southern Sharks in second place with their solitary loss being to the table leaders.

The Typhoons beat Uva Vipers 19-15, Jaffna Challengers 28-14, Eastern Eagles 15-5 and Sharks 12-7. The Sharks overcame the Vipers 17-12, Jaffna Challengers 21-12 and Eastern Eagles 19-7.

In Pool B Northern Gladiators dominated by winning all four matches. Sri Lanka fly half and play maker Fazil Marija led his team well to the top of the table. The rest of teams in the Pool B were involved in a close contest for the second slot as North Western Blacks, Central Kings and Sabaragamuwa Stallions had ten points each. However North Western Blacks managed to secure the second place of the Pool B owing to a better goal average.

Northern Gladiators beat Central Kings 21-14, Western Warriors 26-17, NW Blacks 14-10 and Stallions 28-5 whilst NW Blacks defeated Warriors 26-0 and Stallions 33-5 but lost to Kings 15-14 and Gladiators 14-10.

The tournament will continue today before moving to Nawalapitiya for the next round.
