Report On Welikada Still Delayed

By Indika Sri Aravinda

The report on the Welikada riot which was due out last week has been delayed further.
Chandrasiri Gajadeera, the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms said that all members of the committee who formulated the report need to be present to submit it.

However he said most often one committee member is not available or is overseas and this has resulted in the final report being further delayed. Earlier last month the committee had given an assurance that the report will be handed over by the end of last week.

However the Minister asserted that the report into the November 2012 riot will not be tabled in Parliament.

“This will be an internal document and will be handed over only to the President,” he said. Gajadeera said that the report has to be kept from the public as it contains witness statements made by the inmates and prison guards. The clash at the Welikada prison resulted in the death of 27 people while over 40 others were injured.
